He was the only Regents Professor at the Duluth campus (19 others are at the TC campus). With support from the National Science Foundation an American and Chinese team led by George (Rip) Rapp and Zhichun Jing from the American side and Wang Wei and Tang Jigen from the Chinese side will continue two more seasons of archaeological research at Late Shang site of Anyang in the Chinese Province of Henan. This multidisciplinary research focuses on the co-evolution of human societies and landscapes in the capital territory of the Late Shang state. With prior NSF support the project located and is excavating a major new site, now called Huanbei Shang City [Huanbei means 'north of the Huan River'], that fills in an important chronological gap in our knowledge of the Shang peoples. This site bridges the critical gap between the Zhengzhou phase of the Early Shang and the Yinxu phase of the Late Shang. This site was discovered by systematic geoarchaeological core drilling that was undertaken to determine the third [vertical] dimension and nature of the archaeological deposits in the central region of the Late Shang Dynasty. The team will now continue its excavation of Huanbei Shang City, its archaeological and geoarchaeological surveys, and its studies of environmental change in relation to the operation and final collapse of the Late Shang state. Further excavation at Huanbei Shang City should clarify its political status, including the question of its possible status as the capital during the reign of Pan Geng and two succeeding kings 1:40 PM – 2:20 PM Cancer Prevention by Tea Dr. Zigang Dong Presentation in Mandarin Chinese Executive Director, Hormel Institute University of Minnesota Tea is one of the most popular beverages consumed in the world and has been demonstrated to have anti-cancer activity in animal models. Research findings suggest that the polyphenolic compounds, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, found primarily in green tea, and theaflavin-3,3’-digallate, a major component of black tea and caffeine, are the most effective anti-cancer factors found in tea. Several mechanisms to explain the chemopreventive effects of tea have been presented by others and we suggest that tea components target specific cell-signaling pathways responsible for regulating cellular proliferation or apoptosis. These pathways include signal transduction pathways leading to activator protein-1 (AP-1), nuclear factor kappa B (NFkB) and phosphorylation of histone. AP-1 and NFkB are transcription factors that are known to be extremely important in tumor promoter-induced cell transformation and tumor promotion. Both transcription factors and histone H2 and H3 are influenced differentially by the MAP kinase pathways. Recent research data from our laboratory focusing on the tea-induced cellular signal transduction events associated with the MAP kinase, P70 RSK, AP-1, NFkB and p53 pathways will be presented at the meeting. 2:20 PM – 3:00 PM Dynamic Optimization: Just Just--inin-Time Performance Dr. Wei Hsu Presentation Presentation Delivery 徐慰中博士 in Mandarin Chinese Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of Minnesota 【動態優化】一種即時提升績效的新方法 New processor architectures and micro-architectures often create opportunities for large performance improvement. code may not take full advantage of such performance opportunities. However, legacy object Recompilation may not be a viable option since ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) prefer to distribute a single version executable of their applications. Dynamic optimization is an emerging technique to transparently improve the performance of application binaries as they execute on new processors. This talk reviews the recent development on dynamic optimization systems, including Dynamo, Transmeta's Code Morphing System, and the ADORE project at the University of Minnesota. In the ADORE project, we design and develop a dynamic binary optimization system based on Intel's Itanium architecture. The prototype has shown significant performance gain on some widely used applications. 3:00 PM – 3:15 PM Coffee Break 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM How To Get Ahead In United States Without Key Note Speaker: (Not Really) Trying Hard Mr. Robert Lo 信懷南先生 Presented in Mandarin 老中有請,老美看招 (現代降龍 (現代降龍 18 掌) Chinese 癸未九月,信掌門應明州老中之約,挾 laptop 東行,以文 會友,故地重遊,固樂事也。 4:15 PM - 5:00 PM 1) Professional and Career Development for Asia Mr. Andy Wo Wong Employee in an American Company Vice President and General Manager, 2) Globalization Optical Systems Division, 3M Company. Key to maximizing our contributions and job satisfaction is by recognizing our strengths and capitalizing on opportunities where diverse leadership attributes will enhance our personal and business growth. 3M reported solid results in the first quarter of 2003 with an 11% growth in sales and earnings, again topping analyst expectations. Andy’s Optical Systems was the key success component in both. Optical System led all divisions in 3M with Q1 business growth reaching 76% increase over 2002. His division also led all divisions in operating income by doubling the 2002 results. In this economic downturn, Andy’s division is a legend in 3M and US economic. Within the last ten years, he grows his business from a few millions dollars a decade ago to more than one billion dollars today. Let’s learn from Andy about his secret of success. 5:00 PM - 6:00 6:00 PM Social Hour - Demonstration of Tea Ceremony Moderator: Dr. John C.
