This user guide is intended to get you up and running on Train & Assess IT quickly, so that you can focus your time on learning new skills. System Requirements • • • • • • • Web browser (Internet Explorer 5.01 or higher or Netscape 4.7 or higher) Macromedia Authorware Web Player Live Internet connection (56K minimum connection speed required) Pentium Class or higher CPU, 133 MHz or faster 16 MB RAM (32 recommended) 32 bit operating system (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3, Windows ME, Windows 98) Screen resolution of 800x600 or greater, 256 colors or greater (some lessons require screen resolution of 1024x768) Special Instructions for IWU Students Indiana Wesleyan University has selected Prentice Hall’s Train & Assess IT as a way to assess student’s skills in MS Office 2003, and provide the training necessary to bring those skills up to a baseline level required to succeed in various campus programs. To achieve this goal, Train & Assess IT (TAIT) has been set up for basic level skills in MS Word 2003, Excel 2003 and PowerPoint 2003. With TAIT, students have access to the training necessary to achieve a baseline level mastery of these skills, and to demonstrate that baseline level mastery with a minimum score of 80% or higher. You may access the training and take the test an unlimited number of times‐the goal is to make sure that every IWU student has the MS Office skills and ongoing access to refresher training as necessary for success as they move on to other courses in their curriculum. Students are asked to do the training and take the test as many times as necessary to achieve a minimum score of 80% or higher. There is no penalty for numerous tries, and no reward for achieving a score higher than the required 80% minimum score. It was set up this way to assure student success with a minimum of frustration. As such, the TAIT exercises are graded only on the basis of completion or non‐completion. Students receive the grade for the activity based upon submission of the documentation that they have completed the assigned activity. Whether the score submitted for a grade is above 80% or not does not affect the awarding of completion points for any TAIT assignment. Credit is given for attempting the assignment and submitting the score earned. Students can then pursue a minimum score of 80% or higher as an individual performance goal until they are satisfied with their individual skill levels. 3 Installing Train & Assess IT The Partial Local Install (PLI) CD(s) included in this package contain the Train & Assess IT software that should be installed on any computer on which you plan to take tests using Train & Assess IT. This content has been set up specifically for your course. Click on IWU Online Office 2003 Applications Module. 6. Modules have been set up for Word 2003, Excel 2003, and PowerPoint 2003. 21 7. 8. The first time you enter the course all modules will show as “Not Attempted” under Status. Click on the IWU Online Word 2003 Module. 9. The IWU Online Word 2003 Module has 8 modules set up for training and self‐assessment. 10. Click on Online Word 2003 Project 1 Module to expand the folder. 11. You will now start to work with the training and assessment content that has been assigned to your course. 12. Note that there are 8 Lessons listed—these lessons contain hands‐on training for the topics listed. 13. At the bottom of the Student View screen is the Project Test. Note: You have two options for proceeding through your course: 1. 2. If you are unfamiliar with any particular MS Office software application, go through each training module in order. As you complete a training module the Status will change to “Complete”. After you have completed all the training, take the Test. You can take the test as many times as you like, until you receive a minimum score of 80%. If you think you know how to do the skills listed, you can take the test immediately. Based on the score you receive you will either pass with a minimum score of 80%, or be directed to further training for review. Complete the training and then retry to test. Only your final test attempt will count for completion of each Module, so feel free to refresh your skills with training and retest as many times as necessary to achieve the 80% minimum score. 22 As you proceed through each module, you may see screens that indicate various ways of proceeding through the training. 14. This Student View screen shows that the student completed some training (Lessons 1‐4 show Complete), then decided to take the test. Training lessons that have not been accessed will show Not Attempted. 15. The student received a score of 92% (more than the required minimum score of 80%) on the test, and based on that result the training modules he/she needs to review show up beneath the test name. The tests are set up to identify the areas that require further study and provide the training to achieve a minimum score of 80%. The list of lessons that require additional work will appear immediately after the test is completed. When a student takes the test before completing any or all lessons, a new list of training lessons, based on the results of the test, will appear under the test on your screen. When you see training modules listed both above and below the test name, you should proceed with the lessons listed below the test. A score of 92% on this test brings up one training lesson for the item missed. Remember, 80% is the minimum score needed to progress to the next lesson, so this student can now continue on to the next Project. 23 General Training Information: Many training lessons start with one or more slides that cover key concepts, followed by slides where you will be asked to practice hands‐on skills and review concepts.
