Henry Norfleet Moore President fI Ansearchin • fI News -52Notes From the Editor's Desk Please note that our issues are placed in the mail at the end of each quarter, March, June, September and December. We mail onabulkmailingpermit.third class, and as the Postmaster has the privilege of holding all third class mail for thirty days your bulletin may be delayed. Many queries which have been received do not relate to Tennessee or have a specific date or name included. These are being returned for detailed questions. Please do not send us a long string of surnames only with no specific question asked. We need your cooperation. We are planning to publish more of the-Tax Lists for counties where no records are extant. There is no 1800 census for Tennessee and only two counties ·have an 1810 census, therefore, we are searching for records, not previously published, which will supplement this lack. We also have a file of very early will indexes which will be published in the near future. News and Notes on Other Publications THE HAPPY HUNTER, Cumberland County Genealogical Society, Mary E. However, the 1850 census states that he '.as born in Virginia. Perhaps all of this can be interpreted to mean that he was possibly born in Virginia and then moved to South Carolina when he waS a chqd. The names of his parents are unknown. He was married to a 'HOman named Nancy, born Harch 2, 1788, and by 1814 tbey were living in Robertson County, Tennessee, where he is found in the 1820 census records. Soon after 1820 he moved with his family to Hardeman Co~nty, Tennessee, as he is found on the first tax list for the county 1824, one year after th~ county was created. He was a second lieutenant in the War of 1812, in Captain Crunk's Company, Colonel John Cocke's Second Regiment, West Virginia Militia. He entered service in late November, 1814, at Nashville, Tennessee, and was honorably discharged on May 15, 1815, Nashville, at the close of the war. Thornton and Nancy were the parents of at least nine children: James M., born about 1810; John T., date of birth unknown, Caroline, born about 1813, who was married to Mumford Stokes Marsh; Harriet Wilson, born about 1815, who was married to William Brooks Ruffin; Olivia, date of birth unknown, who was married to Joseph Short; W. T., a son whose name was possiply William Thornton, born March 9, 1820, who was married to a WOman named Martha; Lemuel H., born about 1824, who was married to Elizabeth Young; Rose Anna, born about 1828, who was marri.ed to Robert S. Carter; and Nancy, born about 1830, who was married to James Winchester Deming. Thornton ,Jones died in Hardeman County, Tennessee, on June 8, 1858, and he is buried in a family cemetery, the Jones-Marsh Cemetery, near Toone. He left an estate of land and slaves. In Hardeman County he lived in the old Civil District #14, about seven miles north of Bolivar and the Hatchie River and several miles south of Toone.
