Lab TA: Josh Fuchs
Office: Phillips 106 E-mail: jtfuchs@live.unc.edu
Office Hours: Tuesday, 2pm-4pm
Tutorial Center Hours: Monday 1-2pm, Tuesday 11:15am-1:00pm
Required Materials: WebAssign Access Code, Physics 104 Lab Manual (a hard copy is not required since with the access code you will get a electronic copy). The class key for
WebAssign is unc 9474 2328. www.physics.unc.edu/labs Lab info website contains:
•
Guidelines for writing your lab reports, including the standard grading rubric and samples
•
Sample Lab Exam with answers and explanations
•
Software for use in labs (i.e. LoggerPro)
•
Data comparison tool for analyzing experimental results with uncertainty
WebAssign (www.webassign.net) : We will be using WebAssign for grading of both the prelab and lab reports. Prelabs will generally be due 1 hour before the lab starts. The lab report will generally be due 2 days after the lab is completed. There will be two labs in which a full lab report is to be typed up in accordance with the section in the lab manual on lab reports. The full lab reports will supersede anything turned in on WebAssign. Late submissions for WebAssign grading will not be allowed unless prior approval has been grandted.
Lab Reports and Grading: Quality is more important than quantity. Grading will be based on the standard rubric for the introductory physics labs (see lab website), with special attention to your ability to justify the results that you obtained from the experiment and your reasoning for any discrepancies from predicted results. Reports must be typed, except for equations and figures that may be handwritten. Lab reports are generally due the following lab period unless instructed otherwise. Late reports without prior approval will be subject to a
10-point reduction.
Discussing Lab Reports: The purpose of this lab is to expand your understanding of physics and the scientific process. This is not usually a process that is kept to oneself or done independently. However, since each person has to be graded individually, individual lab reports are necessary. You are allowed to discuss lab reports and any problems you encountered under the Open Hand Policy. This means that while discussing anything pertaining to the lab it must be done without the lab report itself, notes, or note taking equipment of any kind (i.e. nothing in your hands while discussing). Feel free to discuss the labs, but do so to understand the material and not copy the material.
Other items you should bring with you to lab:
• Pre-lab assignment • Bound notebook • Ball-point pen to record your data •
Scientific calculator (one with statistical functions would be ideal) computer with Excel (for data entry and analysis during experiment)
• Laptop
