Tech opens seven-game homestand
Thus Far: Virginia Tech, ranked 19th by the
NFCA and 20th by USA Softball, is 32-11, 13-2
in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies
have gotten hot of late, winning 18 of their last 21
games and even beat the US National Team 1-0 in
an exhibition contest at Oklahoma City.
Charisse Mariconda leads the team with
a .377 batting average with 49 hits and 27 RBI.
Jenna Rhodes is 29-for-32 on stolen bases and is
batting .324. In the circle, Tech’s staff has a 1.12
ERA. Angela Tincher is 23-5 with 416 strikeouts
in 198.0 innings pitched and a 0.46 ERA.
Tech has played a difficult schedule, one that
has included four top-11 opponents. The Hokies
have beaten then-No. 8 Northwestern 1-0 in eight
innings and then-No. 11 Houston 1-0. Tech lost
4-3 in 12 innings at then-No. 8 Arizona and 1-0 to
then-No. 2 UCLA.
Scouting the Highlanders: Radford is having
a great season and comes in to today’s action
with a 30-11 mark, 4-2 in the Big South. The
Highlanders even received a vote in the national
top 25 poll a few weeks back.
Sarah Himan leads the regulars with a .403
average with four home runs and 28 RBI. Local
product Hope Creasy is hitting .369 with five
home runs while Vicki Madden is batting .355
with six dingers.
Two-time Big South Pitcher of the Year
Ashley Taylor is 18-7 with a 1.26 ERA and 160
strikeouts. Freshman Rebecca Whalley is 9-4 with
a 2.73 ERA. As a team, the Highlanders hit an
impressive .297 with32 home runs and 77 stolen
bases and have a team ERA of 1.66.
The Series: Tech leads the series against Radford
24-8 after sweeping the Highlanders last year.
In the opener, Kelsey Hoffman’s pinch hit
RBI single in the top of the seventh provided the
margin of victory as the Hokies won 1-0. In the
second game, the Hokies were down to their last
strike, but a pinch-hit, two-run home run by Beth
Walker gave the Hokies a 3-2 lead.
The Hokies took a commanding lead in the
series after winning 17 straight from 1998-2004.
Tech is 14-6 all-time at home against Radford,
14-2 at Tech Softball Park.
Senior Angela Tincher is 4-0 all-time
against Radford with a save and 70 strikeouts in
34.1 innings pitched. She has allowed just 10 hits
and five runs - two earned (0.41 ERA) - in her
career against Radford.
Sibling Rivalry: No one in the stands will have
the split loyalty like Preston and Sheree Everhart

centerfielder while Jennifer starts at second for the
Highlanders.
Jessica is hitting .215 with three home runs,

Home, Sweet Home: After months of travel
and life on the road, the Hokies are done with
overnight road trips until the postseason. They are
beginning a seven-game homestand this week and
play 12 of their final 13 regular season games at
Tech Softball Park.
Up Next: Following Tuesday’s action, Tech will
host Liberty on Wednesday as part of Tech’s “Day
of Remembrance” to commemorate the one-year
anniversary of the events on campus. Game one is
scheduled for 3 p.m., with both teams going to the
candlelight vigil on campus after the second game.
This weekend, the Hokies will host Florida
State in a key ACC series. On Friday, the Hokies
and Seminoles will play a single game at 7 o’clock
and then will play the doubleheader Saturday
starting at 5 p.m., following the football team’s
Spring Game. Fans are asked to be aware that there
is no reserved parking for any event on Saturday as
it is first-come, first-park.

Did You Know?: Junior Charisse Mariconda does not have a middle name while freshman Jess
Hodge has two … Junior Jessica Everhart has a twin sister, Jennifer, who plays softball at Radford
… Head coach Scot Thomas was in the same fraternity as country music star Kenny Chesney at
ETSU … Assistant coach Al Brauns served in the Vietnam War … Angela Tincher is the first female
from her high school to ever earn a Division I scholarship and is the only player to wear jersey No.
1 in Tech’s 12-year softball history … At seven letters, Erin Ota has the shortest name of anyone in
the history of Tech softball while at 17 letters, Charisse Mariconda’s name is tied with Christine
Trunnell as the longest in Tech softball history … Assistant coach Tiffany McVay was married while
she was in college and she and her husband, Derek, had their first child in December … Kenzie Roark
was an aunt before she was even born and recently became a great aunt … Erin Ota was all-league
in golf at Northwood High and is an avid surfer when back home … Beth Walker and Amber
Walker have a poodle named Louisville Slugger while Misty Hall has a pet rat … Anna Zitt was a
standout basketball player in high school, scoring 999 career points … Whitney Davis was president
of her sophomore, junior and senior classes … Jenna Rhodes was raised on a chicken farm … Kelsey
Hoffman wrote for Tech’s school yearbook: “The Bugle” last year, while Caroline Stolle currently
writes for PlanetBlacksburg.com, a student-run online media organization at Tech … Erin Ota’s sister,
Melissa, played softball at Brown … Angela Tincher worked as a pruner at a vineyard in high school
… Jess Hodge’s family celebrates two Thanksgivings each year: the Canadian Thanksgiving in October
for her mom and the American Thanksgiving for her dad.
Canadian Connection: Freshman Jess Hodge is the latest in the long line of Canadians to suit up
for the Tech softball program. Starting with Michelle Johnson in 1997, Hodge becomes the seventh
Canadian to migrate south to Blacksburg … and they’ve all been from the province of British
Columbia. She won’t be the last, either, as Richelle McGarva, from Cloverdale, British Columbia, has
signed with the Hokies and will transfer in from Lake City (Fla.) Community College next season.

Climbing the Charts: Senior All-American pitcher Angela Tincher is closing in on some ACC and
NCAA marks. She needs two wins to set a new ACC career wins record ( Jessica Sallinger, GT, 109).
She is also the NCAA’s No. 2 pitcher in terms of career strikeouts per seven innings, averaging 13.6
per game. That total trails only Cat Osterman of Texas, who averaged 14.3. Last year, Tincher had a
school- and ACC-record 617 strikeouts with an average of 13.9 Ks per seven innings. She also won an
ACC- and school-record 38 games and stands third all-time in NCAA history for career strikeouts
(1,886).
What’s a Hokie?
Just Virginia Tech, Please
That's the most often-asked question regarding
Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the
way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and
Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia
Polytechnic Institute.
With the change came the necessity for writing a
new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by
the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for
his "Old Hokie" yell which still is used today.
Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special
meaning, Stull explained the words he used had no
hidden or symbolic meaning, but had been thought
up in an effort to get attention. Hokie soon became a
nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal
to Tech athletics.
Following is the "Old Hokie" yell in its original
form:
Hoki, Hoki, Hoki Hy!
Tech! Tech! V.P.I.!
Sola-Rex Sola-Rah
Polytech-Vir-gin-i-a!!
Rae, Ri, V.P.I.
While the full name of the school is
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University, the school is commonly referred
to as “Virginia Tech.”
Founded in 1872, as Virginia
Agricultural and Mechanical College, the
university changed its named to Virginia
Polytechnic Institute in 1896.
Fans of the athletic department,
as well as media covering the Hokies,
shortened the name to VPI, but it
eventually became Virginia Tech.
The “State University” was added in
1970 to bring the official title to what it is
today.
Those covering Hokie athletics are
asked to refer to the university as simply
“Virginia Tech.”
Virginia Tech University, VPI and
SU, VPI&SU, VT or VA Tech are not
recognized names and should not be
used.

Tech Softball Park, home of Virginia
Tech softball since 1998, has been a tough place
for opposing teams to play of the years. Tech
finished in 21st in the nation last year, averaging
546 fans per home date, a year after finishing
17th in the country with an average of 551 fans
per home date.
This year, nearly 800 permanent seats have
been added, along with lights, two more press
boxes and a new sound system, making the
facility a fine one for the Hokies to play.
Over the years, Tech has posted a 142-48
record at home, a winning percentage of .747.

Miracle on Dirt
In one of the biggest upsets in softball
history, the Virginia Tech softball team, behind a
no-hit performance from Angela Tincher, defeated
the U.S. National Softball Team, 1-0, on March 26
in an exhibition game at Hall of Fame Stadium at
Oklahoma City.
The Hokies got a run in the second inning
and that would prove to be enough. Catcher
Kelsey Hoffman led off the inning with a double to
the right-center gap and was pinch ran for by Anna
Zitt. Zitt moved to third on an illegal pitch by
USA pitcher Jennie Finch and scored on a bloop
two-out single by Caroline Stolle.
Tincher, the reigning USA Softball
National Player of the Week, was a walk away
from a perfect game, but struck out 10 in winning
the “Tinch vs. Finch” battle. Finch took the loss,
going 4.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits
with six strikeouts. Monica Abbott pitched the last
three innings, allowing two hits with six strikeouts.
The Hokies had six hits, the most against
the U.S. Team this tour. Beth Walker led the way
with a pair of hits while Jenna Rhodes, Erin Ota,
Hoffman and Stolle each had one. All 18 players
on Tech’s roster who dressed got into the game.
The loss snapped a 185-game pre-Olympic
exhibition tour winning streak dating back to
1996 in which the team had outscored opponents
1,475-24 in that stretch.
The victory made the national Associated
Press wire and national news as outlets ran the
story with the lead sentence “The mighty U.S.
Olympic team struck out”.
Upon its arrival back, the team was escorted
back onto campus by a motorcade of police cars,
a fire truck and ambulance and was greeted by a
large group of fans and supporters.
Sullivan Worthy
Senior pitcher Angela Tincher was one of
five finalists for the prestigious Sullivan Award and
traveled to New York City for an April 1 ceremony
at the New York Athletic Club.
The other finalists were Jonathan Horton
(gymnastics), Jeff Lerg (ice hockey), Philippa
Raschker (track & field) and the winner, Tim
Tebow (football).
It has been presented annually by the AAU
since 1930 and honors the outstanding amateur
athlete in the United States. Based on the qualities
of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the
ideals of amateurism, the AAU Sullivan Award
goes far beyond athletic accomplishments and
honors those who have shown strong moral
character.
She’s a Racer
Not that she hasn’t been doing it for four
years, but senior Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock,
Va.) made more Tech softball history on Feb. 18
when she was drafted by the Akron Racers of the
NPF. She was the No. 3 overall pick and becomes
the highest female Tech athlete ever drafted in a
professional league.
She can’t sign a contract until this season is
over due to NCAA eligibility rules, but is expected
to join the Racers in June when the season starts.

Remembering the Fallen
• Virginia Tech’s official tribute ribbon logo
remembering the victims of the April 16, 2007
tragedy comes from a student-inspired design.
The patch is being worn on Tech athletic jerseys
or warmups this year.
• The logo consists of the well-known
maroon VT athletic logo that symbolizes the
innovative and dynamic nature of Virginia Tech,
over an orange ribbon that is in recognition of
the lives lost on April 16 and a symbol of the
victims’ prevailing Hokie spirit.
• The tribute ribbon appears on the sleeves
of Tech’s jerseys as an inspiration and celebration of the victims’ lives and
the unforgettable mark they left on the Tech community, the nation and the
world.
Gettin’ It Done In The Classroom
Senior Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) has been a spark plug on the
field, but also gets it done in the classroom.
Last year, she was named a first-team Academic All-American by ESPN
the Magazine, a year after making the second team. She has earned first-team
all-district honors twice and carries an impressive 3.84 GPA in finance and
will enroll in Tech’s graduate school this fall in pursuit of an MBA.
Jenna Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) is just as quick to pull in good grades as
she is on the field as she carries a 3.63 GPA in sociology. Elly Gosby (Sydney,
Australia) has a 3.51 GPA in English and Erin Ota (Irvine, Calif.) sports a
3.49 in architecture. In all, eight players on the roster boast GPAs of 3.1 or
higher, led by Tincher.
The Unsung Hero
Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) may get all the attention and holds a
lot of records, but she’s the first to point out a lot of her success has to do with
her catcher and roommate, Kelsey Hoffman (Tequesta, Fla.). Hoffman has
been catching Tincher since the two were freshmen in 2005 and the they have
developed quite a rapport. Hoffman calls all of the pitches for Tincher and
has become quite adept at breaking down opposing batters for game plans,
giving the staff a coach on the field. As the starting catcher, Hoffman has an
impressive record of 93-36.
International Experience
Three of the Hokies, and their SID, spent last summer gaining valuable
international softball experience. Charisse Mariconda (Hollywood, Fla.)
made the Puerto Rican National Team and played in the Canada Cup and the
Pan Am Games in Brazil in an attempt to make the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Freshman Jess Hodge (Vancouver, B.C.) played a prominent role at
shortstop for Team Canada at the Junior Women’s World Championships
in Enschede, Netherlands as Canada advanced to the medal round of the
16-team tournament. That’s the same tournament Tech’s Associate Director
of Athletics Communications and softball contact Bryan Johnston attended
as he was chosen by USA Softball to be the USA Junior Team’s media
relations contact. Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) was invited to the U.S.
Olympic Team tryouts in Chula Vista, Calif., last September and five days
pitching against the world’s best squad. This comes one summer after helping
lead the U.S. World University Games team to a gold medal in Taiwan.
A CLASS of Her Own
Senior Angela Tincher is up for yet another award for her on and offthe-field work . She is one of 10 of the nation’s best college softball players
who also excel in the classroom and make an impact in their respective
communities have been selected as the 2008 candidates in the softball division
of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
The award, presented to NCAA Division I student-athletes each year in
eight sports, focuses on the “Four C’s” of classroom, character, community and
competition.
This marks the second year for the softball division of the Lowe’s
Senior CLASS Award. From the list of 30 nominees, a national media
committee selected 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Those
10 names have been placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote that
will include coaches, media and fans. Fans can go online to: http://softball.
seniorclassaward.com/ and vote.
The award winner will be announced and recognized at the 2008 NCAA
Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
168 and Counting
Junior Charisse Mariconda has started all 168 games played in her three
seasons at Tech and could end up being the first player in Tech softball history
to start every game in a four-year span. The closest any player has come to
accomplishing the feat was Michelle Meadows, who started 250 games out
of 252 games played during her career. Mariconda has started 133 games at
third base and 35 games at shortstop.
Jessica Everhart had her streak ended on April 13 at Boston College
when a shoulder injury sidelined her for the first time in her career. Everhart
had started 165 games in a row in centerfield and then two games at
designated player on April 12 until that game on April 13.
In the RPI Rankings
The NFCA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is released weekly at
http://www.fullysports.com/softball/2008/rpi and this week, the Hokies are
up to 22nd overall with a strength of schedule rating of 54th. That number is
sure to go up with No. 14 North Carolina, No. 40 Florida State, No. 57 East
Carolina and No. 55 Radford still on the schedule.
The Hokies are also being helped by successful campaigns from teams
they’ve already played this year that are in the top 25: No. 3 UCLA, No. 7
Houston, No. 9 Arizona, No. 16 Northwestern, No. 19 Missouri and No. 27
Maryland in which the Hokies have a 5-4 mark against.
Summer Plans
Senior catcher Kelsey Hoffman is one of seven ACC student-athletes
selected to participate in the 2008 ACC Futures Internship Program.
Hoffman, a communication major who will graduate this spring, will begin
a 10-month assistantship with Sun Sports/FSN in Orlando, Fla., in late
summer working with the marketing department.
SunSports is one of five entities that Atlantic Coast Conference
student-athletes have the opportunity to intern with. Each ACC member
institution may nominate a maximum of three candidates according to
specific criteria and instructions provided by the ACC Futures Internship
Program.
This year, 26 nominees began the process with only 16 making the first
cut. From there only seven were placed in one of the 10-month internships
including Hoffman as one of two with Sun Sports/FSN, one with the Orange
Bowl Committee, one with the ACC Office, two with Disney’s Wide World
of Sports also in Orlando, Fla., and one with Sun Sports/FSN South &
Sports South in Atlanta, Ga.
