Then and now
Last weekend, I saw my cousin Louise. The last time I saw her was six
years ago, and she has changed a lot. She was eight then, and she was
short and well-built, and she wore glasses. Now she’s really different.
She’s tall and slim, and she plays a lot of sport. She doesn’t wear glasses
either.
Louise goes to secondary school now, and she plays volleyball for the
school team. At the moment, she’s got a broken arm because she had an
accident two weeks ago. Louise normally cycles everywhere, but she
can’t go cycling at the moment because of her arm. At school, her
favourite subjects are the same as mine: art and P.E. When she leaves
school, she wants to be a designer or a P.E. teacher.
Six years ago, Louise came on holiday with me and my family. We went
to France and Louise and I stayed in a tent together. There were insects
in her sleeping bag and my mum forgot to take some insect repellent. It
was very sunny and Louise got sunburn too. I remember that she wasn’t
very happy. This summer, she’s going to come to the beach with us. I
think that it will be much better this year, but she should take some
suncream this time!

My school life
When I started at this school, my first impressions weren’t very good. I
didn’t know anyone, so I felt worried and shy. I thought my classmates
were very quiet, and the school was big and unfriendly. But after a few
weeks I felt much better. I was more relaxed, and I started to make new
friends.
Now I really enjoy going to school. I see my friends here every day, and I
like most of my classes. This year I’m studying ten subjects. My favourite
subject is geography. At the moment we’re doing a project about the
environment. It’s about the way the world’s temperature is increasing, and
its effect on the weather. I’m definitely interested in studying geography at
univeristy.
I also go to an after-school club at school.
The after-school club is a place where you do other activities, like sports or
creative things.
I go there twice a week. At the moment we’re learning to edit digital
photographs on the computer. I think that it’s really exciting.
Most of my teachers here are nice. The best teacher is Mrs Hammond, my
geography teacher. At first, I didn’t like Mrs Hammond because I thought
she was too strict. But in fact she’s very friendly. The only teacher I don’t
like is Mr Brown. He’s really moody and he gives us too much homework.

The Gap Year
Every year, thousands of students take a ‘gap year’ – like a year’s holiday –
before they go to university. Others take their gap year after university,
before they start looking for a job. This idea has become very popular in
Britain and Ireland, and 200,000 students took a gap year last year. What
do these students do during the year? Many of them do voluntary work, and
others travel around the world. They definitely return with some fantastic
memories!
Robert, 18, has just decided to take a gap year before he goes to London
University. He’s never travelled before, so he feels a little nervous. ‘I’ll
probably do voluntary work in the USA,’ he says. ‘I want to go to a place
where I can speak the language. I’m interested in working in a national
park, because I’m going to study geography at university.’
Tamsin, 19, has just returned from her gap year. She’s visited Europe,
Australia and Africa. Tamsin travelled with her best friend Lizzie, and they
had different jobs while they were going around the world. ‘I’ve been a
waitress in a café, and I’ve taught English in a small school in Kenya. The
best thing I’ve learned is to be more responsible. I’ve made a lot of friends
during my gap year. It was a fantastic experience and I definitely
recommend it!’

I’ve always loved ballet. When I was little, I went to the theatre with my
mum to watch famous ballets. I loved the atmosphere of the theatre, and
all the costumes. Then I started dancing when I was six. I’m fifteen now, so
I’ve danced for nine years. It isn’t easy, but I really enjoy it. I practise
every day, and I go to ballet classes three times a week. I’ve competed in
some dancing competitions, and I’ve won two trophies. I want to go to
ballet school in London next year. Perhaps I’ll be a famous ballerina!
Jessica, 15
I’m crazy about motocross. I was fourteen when I started riding a

and I’ve won the Regional Youth Championship. I’ve always loved riding
bikes.
I learned to ride my first bike when I was only four, and I
haven’t stopped since then. Motocross is really exciting, but it can be
dangerous. You must wear a helmet and special clothes. I had a bad

I think that it’s really exciting.

she was too strict. But in fact she’s very friendly. The only teacher I don’t

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m writing about the advert in the newspaper for au pairs. I would like to
work as an au pair in Spain for a year starting next summer.
I’m sending my C.V., from which you can see that I have got experience of
working with children as a volunteer at my local primary school. I would like
to work in Spain because I am studying Spanish at school, and would love
to have the opportunity to practise it more. After working as an au pair, I
am going to study languages at London University.
I would be happy to come for an interview. I am available every afternoon
from Monday to Friday. I look forward to hearing from you.
