Definition
WBS is a deliverables-orientated
collection of project components
 It is a categorization and decomposition
of the project deliverables
 WBS should be input for the cost
estimation, time planning, risk planning,
quality planning and resource planning.


 WBS creates a sense of urgency
 WBS can help prevent scope creep
 WBS provides control
 WBS is the scope baseline


Divide your project into phases
 Phase has deadline, portion of project
that must be complete before another
phase in begin
 Define the work package in each phase


Work package is the smallest deriverable
in WBS ( 8/80 rules!)
 Main output : WBS and WBS Dictionary

project sponsor to confirm the series of


