West Virginia Regional Science Bowl
WELCOME
Welcome to the 25th annual West Virginia Regional Science Bowl, the National
Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and West Virginia University are pleased
to welcome and host 16 middle school teams and 24 high school teams from
across the state to this year’s competition!
NETL and WVU are excited and proud to host this competition fostering
math and science excellence in our state’s students. Both institutions have
a long history of encouraging, supporting, and developing scientific inquiry
and discovery, and the West Virginia Regional Science Bowl is an important
link in connecting our youths to our nation’s future. The understanding and
accomplishments in science of our young people will prepare them to become
leaders, innovators and successful citizens in our increasingly technological
society. The Science Bowl is truly an exemplary community program that
encourages participants to look beyond high school to future post-secondary
education and career development in energy science, medicine, robotics,
engineering and communications.
The West Virginia Regional Science Bowl is possible as the result of the
continued support of the education and corporate sponsors across West Virginia
and the investment of time and energy of the many volunteers. The Science Bowl
organizers at NETL and WVU also recognize the students and coaches for their
long hours of preparation for the competition.
All participants—students, coaches, volunteers—are invited to experience the
complete events. Enjoy the encouraging words of the guest speakers, take
time to visit the college and university informational booths, and participate in
hands-on engineering activities and science tours. Most of all, good luck . . . and
have fun!

others. In 1990, David was elected as Chairman of the West Virginia Republican
Party Executive Committee and was one of three representing West Virginia on
the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C.
He holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Purdue University.
A lifelong resident of Wheeling, McKinley is married to a critical care nurse, Mary.
They have four children and six grandchildren. He is passionate about the people

Chuck Yeager
Division 2
John Nash
Chuck Yeager grew up in Hamlin, West
Virginia. Early on, he took an interest
in his dad’s machinery work, absorbing
all he could about the machines he
operated. Following a lackluster trek
through high school, Yeager enlisted
as an airplane mechanic with the
United States Air Force during World
War II. Yeager arrived in England
with the 363rd fighter squadron and
began flying his P-51 Mustang, which
he named Glamorous Glen. After
only eight missions, the 21-year-old
Yeager was shot down over Germanoccupied France. Wounded and alone,
he crossed the French Pyrenees to
freedom, but then appealed to General
Dwight D. Eisenhower to remain in
combat.
John Nash was born in 1928, in
Bluefield, West Virginia. He entered
Bluefield College in 1941 where he
studied mathematics and science.
Mr. Nash won a scholarship in the
George Westinghouse Competition
and was accepted by the Carnegie
Institute of Technology (now Carnegie
Mellon University) in June 1945. His
growing interest in mathematics led
him to courses on tensor calculus and
relativity. Mr. Nash received a B.A.
and an M.A. in mathematics in 1948.
In September that same year, Nash
was accepted to Princeton University
where he pursued a broad range of
pure mathematics. Topology, algebraic
geometry, game theory, and logic
were among his interests. Rather

Dr. Kimberly Weaver
Division 4
Homer H. Hickam, Jr.
Dr. Kimberly A. Weaver is an awardwinning American astrophysics
astronomer and professor and an
expert in x-ray astronomy. Dr. Weaver
was born in Morgantown, West
Virginia, in 1964. She attended West
Virginia University and completed a
B.S. degree in physics in 1987. The
following year, she enrolled at the
University of Maryland and graduated
in 1990 with an M.S. in astronomy.
In 1993, she received her Ph.D. in
astronomy from University of Maryland
at College Park. Her doctoral thesis
was in complex broadband x-ray
spectra of Seyfert Galaxies. Dr. Weaver
then went to Goddard’s Laboratory
for High Energy Astrophysics in 1998,
where she worked as a civil servant
scientist. While there, she concentrated
in x-ray astronomy, particularly on the
Constellation X satellite project, which
is part of NASA’s “Beyond Einstein”
program. She also worked extensively
with the Chandra x-ray telescope
where many important observations
were made with respect to starburst
galaxies, black holes, and other
astronomical phenomena. Dr. Weaver
was part of the Spitzer space telescope
team that discovered a massive
asteroid belt around a mature, sun-like
star named HD69830, which is 41 light
years away. Currently, Dr. Weaver
continues her work at NASA and is also
an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Homer H. Hickam, Jr. was born in
1943, and raised in Coalwood, West
Virginia. He graduated from Big Creek
High School in 1960 and from Virginia
Tech in 1964 with a B.S. in industrial
engineering. Mr. Hickam served as a
First Lieutenant in the Fourth Infantry
Division in Vietnam in 1967–1968
where he won the Army Commendation
and Bronze Star medals. After 6 years
on active duty, Hickam left the service
with the rank of Captain.
After his return from Vietnam, Hickam
turned to writing. His books include
Rocket Boys (re-titled October Sky),
Torpedo Junction, Back to the Moon,
The Coalwood Way, and many others.
In 1981, he began employment with
NASA as an aerospace engineer at
Marshall Space Flight Center. During
his NASA career, Mr. Hickam worked
in spacecraft design and crew training.
His specialties included training
astronauts on science payloads, and
extravehicular activities. He has also
trained astronaut crews for many
Spacelab and Space Shuttle missions,
including the Hubble space telescope
deployment mission, the first two
Hubble repair missions, Spacelab-J
(the first Japanese astronauts), and
the Solar Max repair mission. (Adapted
