Letter from President and CEO: Foreseeing the economy, and its people, in 2016

Many organizations, including

The Main Line Chamber of Commerce, present expert speakers this time of year who share their views of how the world, nation and region will fare in the year ahead. Following the 2008-2009 recession, these events were depressing as economists universally concluded we would face a multi-year slog back.

As is the way in economic cycles, the story has gotten better in recent years.

We featured one of my favorite economists,

Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics, at our Economic

Forecast Breakfast and Annual Meetings in February.

In front of a room full of business leaders, Zandi talked about the steady march toward full employment, predicting we would be there by summer.

Unemployment nationally and in Pennsylvania is just under 5 percent. This means employers should sharpen their efforts to retain their top talent.

Zandi also offered that volatile domestic stock markets, which are influenced by global factors like the price of fuel and an economic downturn in China, belie the strength that our companies are showing. If our companies continue to do well, it only makes sense that U.S. markets will stabilize.

A survey conducted by the Philadelphia

Federal Reserve and presented by the Greater

Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce concluded that nearly 70 percent of businesses in our region believed economic conditions had improved in 2015.

Labor quality was the top area of concern.

At the City Avenue District’s Futurecast event, developer Bill Glazer of Keystone Property

Group presented an ambitious vision for growth along the corridor – re-energizing a place where people live, work and shop. When asked what was most needed to achieve the dream, the answer

Glazer gave was more jobs.

The messages in 2016 confirm that your

Chamber’s mission of helping companies connect with business, leadership development and talent is timely as we strive to help our companies thrive.

Have an energizing and profitable day.

Professional profile

Meet the Founder of Shredwich Steve Hettinger

How did you decide on your profession?

My junior high and high school nick name was “happy”… so, naturally, I genuinely enjoy making other people smile. The restaurant and hospitality industry is the perfect profession for me. I have the best job in the world… A simple smile, along with great food can make a difference in our guest’s day.

What do you love most about your job?

What don’t I love about my job…I pretty much love it all! I love serving healthy food quickly, I love the simplicity of fast casual restaurants, I love our guests, and most importantly I love our team members!

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome to make your business a success?

The biggest obstacle has been brand identity and customer education. This is the first and only

ShredWich, so we created the brand from scratch. We have to educate our customers on the type of food ShredWich specializes in (hot, slow roasted meats). We are also adjusting our brand’s “blueprint” based on customer feedback.

How has The Main Line Chamber of Commerce benefitted you and your business? What has been the greatest resource we have provided for you?

Starting a new business is fun and exciting, but at the same time is can be stressful and scary. The Chamber’s greatest resource it has provided me with is “emotional support”. It’s such a great feeling to see a familiar face walk into your store on days when things may not be going perfect. We are very fortunate to have Chamber members whom are loyal and supportive to local business. It has also helped the community identify with the brand.

Why is being a member of The Main Line Chamber of Commerce important to you?

It forces me to get out of the restaurant and see what’s beyond my four walls. I am so passionate about my business that if it wasn’t for Chamber events, and my family… I would probably live in our restaurant! It is important to be involved in the community that your business is located.

What is your favorite destination outside of the one you represent and why?

I am very thankful for the opportunities, business teachings, and support my father has given me over the years. Therefore, I am a loyal customer of his full service, casual restaurant in Wyomissing, PA called ViVA Bistro.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

At age 10, my father put me to work (didn’t have a choice in the matter) in our family’s soft drink bottling plant in Reading, PA.

I always wanted to continue the family tradition of bottling, dating back to my great grandparent, and become a business owner. However, after the family business was sold in 2003 I discovered a passion for hospitality within the restaurant industry.

Meet The Young Professionals Committee

Our world today is ever-changing. How we conduct business in 2016 is incredibly different than how people did it twenty, even ten, years ago. The way we interact with each other both personally and professionally has changed, with social media making it easier to connect with people from all over the world. But the argument remains - are these social media outlets contributing to the death of cultivating real, face-to-face relationships?

When I entered the real estate business at age 25, many mentors told me I’d need to “tap into my sphere” to get business. Well, at that time in 2010, the housing market was attempting to pull itself up by its bootstraps and my socalled “sphere” thought I was nuts for getting into home sales at such a volatile time. While I was in high school, my mother worked for our local Chamber of

Commerce, so I knew then what an important asset a Chamber was to its business community. The first thing I did after getting my real estate license was get myself a Main Line Chamber membership. Frankly, most of my friends and family were not thinking of selling or purchasing homes at that point, so I thought that if I could meet new people and forge some new relationships, I could create a new circle and hopefully some new business opportunities.

Thankfully, there was a perfect outlet for me within the Chamber - the

Young Professionals (YP) group. I quickly got involved and five years later, now serve as the committee chair. Many accuse the YP demographic of not getting out from behind our social media enough - that we’re unable to maintain conversation with our peers and truly make long-lasting connections. I beg to differ. Through our events, of which we have 6-8 sponsored happy hours per year, I have made some of the most significant professional relationships of my career, that have led to colleagues becoming clients and also friends.

Many professionals and entrepreneurs see Chamber networking events as an avenue for passing out as many business cards as possible, and hoping that on a whim and prayer someone turns into a paying client.

But when we actually do step out from behind our Facebook and

Instagram accounts, it turns out we’re all looking to build solid, genuine connections - connections that can ultimately, over time, turn into reciprocal income-producing business. The Chamber is a fabulous place to start this networking journey - and if you’re a YP, we’d love to meet you at our next event. To register for our upcoming Happy Hour on April
