A University Study Says Your Brainy Baby® Can Learn!
A recent University study empirically demonstrated that
children can learn from Brainy Baby®!
The study, conducted at The University of Texas, Austin,
found that infants and toddlers under the age of two can learn
from DVDs designed to teach young children shapes. The peer
reviewed study used the Brainy Baby’s Shapes & Colors DVD
and the results were published in The Journal of Children
and Media, (JOCAM), Fall 2010 (Vol.4, Issue 4).
Here are few key points of the study:
· The researchers exposed two groups of children to a series
of commonly familiar shapes, like circle and square. In addition, the experimental group was also exposed to a novel
shape, a crescent, using the Brainy Baby® teaching method.
· The results showed that toddlers between 18 and 33 months,
in the experimental group, were 22 times more successful
identifying the crescent shape in a book, after being exposed
to the crescent in the DVD, than those in the control group.
· The results also confirmed
that the crescent could be
recognized in other
traditional 2-dimensional
media like flashcards.
· Solid, well-crafted content,
along with the “teach,
repeat, review” method is
undeniably successful.

Tips for the Teacher
Here are few ways you can make learning at home productive,
well-rounded and FUN:
• Create a warm, inviting and colorful learning environment by
designating a specific room or area of your home as your child’s
“special learning place.”
• Be ready for repetition. It might drive you crazy at times, but it
is the key to early learning. Read the same books, play the same
games and sing the same songs over and over-it’s how the connections are made. When it becomes too much, mix it up and rotate
subjects, materials and activities. Variation promotes interest,
but don’t resist the need for repetition.
• Encourage your child to ask questions about anything and listen
to everything. If you feel your child isn’t engaged, ask questions
to peak his interest or start reviewing information he already
knows to build confidence.
• Lastly, laugh a lot! When things are funny, they are enjoyable.
After reviewing a subject that may be difficult, play “tickle
monster” or tell a little joke to lighten the mood and lift your
child’s spirits.
• Be animated—your voice and facial expressions give life to
any subject.
• Make your child’s learning meaningful. Relate what your child
sees in the DVDs, books and flashcards to objects around your
home, to experiences had with friends or to the outdoors.
• Ask different family members, or anyone who is important to
your child, to participate in learning activities. This shows your
child that she has a support system.
• Take fieldtrips to your back yard. Going outside of your home is
both refreshing and rejuvenating. Point out the green leaves,
purple flowers, blue sky, etc.
• Praise your child’s correct answers and hard work when learning
something new. Focus on your child’s strengths and be patient
with concepts that may be hard to grasp.
