To Teachers:
We have written a letter to future drivers that we suggest you consider passing out to
students. The letter would be a good basis for discussing the possible negative reactions
they may receive from some people. Our experience, however, has been mostly positive
– with parents and others realizing that driving is a vital part of becoming independent for
almost everyone in today’s world.
The prejudices of the past about people with disabilities need to be overcome. The best
way to do this is to help young people with learning and physical disabilities demonstrate
their true capabilities – when they are given a chance to learn. We wish you well.
Robin Lanzi and Wanda Newell
SAMPLE LETTER TO SHARE WITH STUDENTS
Dear Future Drivers of Alabama:
When Project Drive began, there were many people who thought we would never
succeed. Many people still believe that a student in special education or a person with
learning or reading disabilities should not be driving a car! Many parents are afraid their
children may be hurt, or may get lost or confused, by becoming a licensed driver.
Please be patient when others may show some fear or concern. This is normal. All
parents worry some when their children first become drivers. This is because young and
inexperienced drivers are likely to have some accidents (hopefully only minor ones) and
driving really is complicated.
The good news is that with hard work, a good attitude, and a willingness to learn from
others who know about driving – and to learn the rules of the road – almost all citizens
can become safe drivers.
You will need a lot of practice. You will need the support and cooperation of your
family. You also will need to really get to “know yourself.” Many young drivers wait a
long time before they go on crowded streets, drive on the freeway, or try to find their way
to a new place all on their own. This is okay. Even many adult and experienced drivers
stay away from certain driving situations – like not driving at night when it is dark or not
driving when there is heavy rain. Don’t be embarrassed to drive only when you feel safe
and confident!
Also, as you learn to drive well, you may also discover that you are willing to take on
other hard learning tasks – ones that maybe you thought you could never do. Driving is a
way to get to places you want to go. Driving can take you to friends and relatives. It can
help you to continue your schooling. It can get you to and from a job safely and on time.
It can let you enjoy new places and activities in your community, on your own, from
shopping and going out to eat to new recreation and sports, going to museums and
concerts, seeing historical places, and visiting parks.
We know you can do it! Many other students before you have succeeded. Some people
take longer to learn the skills and all of the information. Everything you learn is
important – and may someday help you even save a life. Pay attention and ask questions.
Practice. Listen to suggestions from others. This is what learning to drive is like for
everybody!
Thanks for joining Project Drive – and making driving a possibility for almost all of
Alabama’s citizens!
Truly,
The leaders of Project Drive
Overview
Each chapter will contain a cover sheet listing the objectives and materials
included for that chapter. All pages listed correlate with the Modified
Alabama Drivers’ Manual.
Included in each chapter are word searches, crossword puzzles, flash cards,
and different testing activities. The testing activities include fill-in-the-blank
type questions, multiple-choice questions, and a Chapter Test section.
Please read the following for teaching tips.
Teaching Tips:
Flash Cards- Two sets of flash cards are in each chapter. The larger cards
are printed on green card stock, including both the word on the front of the
card and the definition on the back. Please cut these pages in half to produce
flash cards. You may want to purchase pocket protectors to store the flash
cards. All flash cards are also printed on plain white paper, in case you need
to reproduce them later. The smaller card stock cards are color-coded -- the
vocabulary words are printed on blue card stock and the definitions on
yellow card stock. These can be used in a variety of ways. For example,
students can independently match the definition with the vocabulary word.
Or you can divide up the flash cards among the students and have students
roam the room to match the correct word to its definition.
Word Searches- This is another way to reinforce vocabulary words and
spelling. Word searches can also be used as an excellent way to introduce
vocabulary. (It may be helpful to have students number across the top and
down the sides and then give them the beginning letter position.) For
example:

Crossword Puzzles - Included in each chapter are two different crossword
puzzles. One puzzle includes the vocabulary wordlist. This can be used to
introduce or review vocabulary. The other puzzle does not include the
vocabulary wordlist and can also be used to review vocabulary or to test
vocabulary.
Worksheets - Also included in each chapter are various worksheets to help
teach the objectives of the chapter. There are matching exercises, teaching
activities, and checklists. Also included in this section are notes and
activities from different Driver Education teachers.
Tests - All chapters also include sample tests. There are multiple choice,
fill-in-the-blank and matching tests. Also included in each chapter are
Chapter Test questions. These are questions that the students must know for
the written driver’s test (i.e., Learner’s License Exam). They are written in
the format of the Learner’s License Exam. Difficult words will be defined
the first time the question is given. The questions will also have a
correlating page number from the “Modified Alabama Drivers’ Manual.”
Some of the questions may have short activities to reinforce the information
needed. There are also two Mixed Review tests (one for the first half and
one for the second half of the manual). These tests consist of all the Chapter
Test questions from the preceding chapters. The Mixed Review will not
contain correlating page numbers or vocabulary definitions. This provides
the student with the same test format as the one the student will take for the
Learner’s License Exam. The first Mixed Review covers Chapters 1-4 and
the second Mixed Review covers Chapters 6-9. There are no review
questions for Chapter 5, as this chapter mainly focuses on recognition and
understanding of signs, signals, and road markings. Please use the Chapter 5
Test Question sheet to review this chapter. The answers for the Mixed
Review questions can be found in the Answer Key sections for the
individual Chapter Test Questions.
Answer Keys - All chapters have an Answer Key section to aid in quick
grading. Please note that answers for “Fill-in-the Blank” questions do not
need to be worded exactly the same.

Driver Education Notes
Lesson 1
A. Peer Pressure comes in 2 categories — Positive and Negative.
Positive Peers - have a safe attitude and do not take part in, or make
destructive decisions.
Negative Peers - have a destructive attitude—do drugs—drive
recklessly—show no regard for the welfare of others and dislike any
kind of authority figure.
B. The 2 main things that stand in your way of becoming a happy and
successful citizen are:
Using drugs
Driving in an unsafe manner.
C. Make decisions based on your best interest—not based on other’s ideas.
Your future is bright. Don’t dim it with destructive decisions.
D. Teens tend to drive too fast for their experience level. Remember, the
faster you hit something, the more it’s going to hurt.
Lesson 2
A. The main cause of collisions is driver error.
Drivers make mistakes—not cars! Cars only do what the driver makes
them do.
B. When driving, use two hands on the wheel and make sure you have your
seat belt on!
C. Yellow lines mean 2-way traffic. White lines mean one-way traffic.
Solid lines—either color—should not be crossed.
D. Follow the “basic speed law” which means you drive at a speed that is
safe for the conditions present, but never over the posted speed.
E. Maintain a 2-second following distance—3 in bad weather.
Copyright 1999, Board of Trustees University of Alabama at Birmingham
Chapter 4, pg. 17
F. Check mirrors every 4-7 seconds and blind spots before changing lanes.
G. A car is less stable in rain, so slow down when roads are wet. If your
car skids—steer in direction that the rear of car is sliding.
Lesson 3
A. Alcohol is the leading cause of:
1. Highway fatalities
2. Child abuse
3. Domestic abuse
4. Divorce
5. Murder
6. Lost jobs
7. Lost homes
8. Suicides
9. HIV
10. Abuse of other drugs
B. Drinking and smoking can take years and years off your life.
C. Alcohol affects the brain—therefore decision making is impaired,
making driving dangerous.
D. If you think you have to drink or smoke to “get by” or “fit in” and that
you can “handle it” then you are already an addict! Get help to stop!
E. If you honestly care about your future and your family and yourself—
you will not use alcohol, tobacco, or any other harmful drugs.

Adjust to Driving Conditions
Suggested Teaching Ideas:
1. Discuss how important it is to know how to handle oneself in an
emergency situation. Impress upon students that you do not get a chance
to practice how to react during emergencies. A wrong move could cost
you your life.
2. Have students act out driving and then handling an emergency situation.
Have remainder of class guess what the emergency situation is. Play as
you would “Charades.”

The Road Test
The last step in getting your driver’s license is the road test.
On this test, you will drive your car while a state trooper sits in the
“passenger” seat and grades you. Do not worry about it when the trooper
writes notes about your driving. He or she is recording the good things you
do as well as the things you need to work on.
The car you drive must be in good working condition as outlined in the
handbook.
The following items are important parts of the road test. Review them
before attempting to take the road test.
Handling the Car
Starting the Car - Make sure you know the location of the following
controls: brake, gas pedal, turn signals, emergency brake, wipers, light
switch and dimmer switch, ignition switch, and the gear shift selector. After
you have started your car, be sure to turn your head to check the area all
around your car.
Stopping the Car - Be sure to stop as smoothly as possible if you can. Do
not wait till the last second to apply the brakes—slow down early, and be
sure to check your rear view mirrors before stopping.
Backing the Car - Before backing, be sure the car is in Reverse! Check
traffic - use your mirrors, and then do a head check. Then back up slowly.
The way you back up depends on the direction you are going.
• To back straight out: put your left hand on top of the wheel and your
right hand behind the passenger’s seat. Look out the rear window.
Use small movements on the wheel to keep the car straight.
• To back up to the left or right: keep both hands on the wheel and use
hand over hand steering. Watch the front of your car to be sure it
doesn’t hit anything. To back left, steer left. To back right, steer
right.

Chapter 10, page 2
Parking - To park, slow down, and proceed with caution. Try to stay
between the lines of the parking space. Watch the cars parked next to you
and try to park in the middle of your space. When leaving the parking space,
check the traffic on the street, and watch as you back out. Do not turn too
sharply. You may hit a parked car. Also remember the rules for parking on
hills (see below).
Turn About - On your driver’s test, you will have to make a 3-point turn.
Before you start the turn, be sure to check the traffic in all directions. Then,
turn the wheel all the way to the left and proceed slowly to the other side of
the street. Stop before you hit the curb. Next, put your car in reverse, then
turn the wheel all the way to the right, and back up slowly. Keep looking out
of the rear-side window for the curb. Get as close to the curb as you can
without touching the curb and stop. Put your car in drive, turn the wheels all
the way to the left, and proceed slowly. If you do not hit a curb, you have
done a 3-point turn successfully!
Parking on a Hill – Always use the parking brake on a steep hill after you
stop.
• Starting from a Steep Hill - Release the foot brake while very gently
pressing the gas. When you feel the car start to move, release the
parking brake and proceed. Remember to check the traffic in all
directions before going into the road.
• For downhill parking - always turn the wheel to the right, toward the
curb side.
• For up-hill parking - turn the wheels to the curb side if there is no
curb. Turn the wheels to the left, toward the street side, if there is a
curb.
• Position the car as far to the right in your lane as you can when
parking on a hill.
Posture - Sit up straight. Your feet should touch the brake with the ball of
your foot. Keep both hands on the wheel at the “9 & 3” or “10 & 2” clock
positions.
Following- Stay at least 2 seconds behind car in front of you.
Overtaking - When someone is passing you in their car, stay to the right
side of your lane and slow down just a little to allow the passing driver more
space. NEVER speed up when another car is trying to pass you. Passing is

Chapter 10, page 3
very dangerous. Avoid it if possible. If you must pass, stay within the speed
limit. Make sure it is legal to pass in the place where you are planning to
pass (check the center pavement lines).
Turning
Right Turns - To make your right turn, be sure to signal correctly. Stay in
your lane. Never swing out into the other lane to turn. Always slow down
before you start the turn, but DO NOT STOP IN THE ROADWAY! Make
sure you stay in your lane on the road you turned right onto.
Left Turns - To turn left:
• Give the correct signal
• Slow down
• Check the traffic coming toward you
• Stop and allow cars and trucks to go through the intersection if necessary
• While waiting, keep the wheel straight
• When it is safe to turn, turn left into the correct lane for the road you are
entering
One-way Streets - Watch for signs telling you the street is one-way. If the
one-way street has lanes, stay in the lane you first entered when you turned
from the two way street. If no lanes are marked on the one-way street, stay
in middle of the road. Watch out for cars leaving parking spaces or people
leaving or entering parked areas.
Left from one-way street• Give your left signal
• Check both ways
• Turn into correct lane on the two-way street
• Go quickly while turning the wheel
• Do not use both lanes of the two-way street

Things to Remember
Stop Signs - At all stop signs, make a full stop in the right half of your lane.
Check your mirrors and flash your brake lights before stopping, then stop
even with the stop sign.
Other Signs - Speed limit signs must be noticed and obeyed. The speed
limit posted on the sign starts at the sign, so you need be going the posted
speed when you get to the sign. Notice all warning signs and follow the
advisory speed sign if any are posted.
Traffic Lights - Try and notice the lights as soon as you can. Remember
that steady green lights may change quickly. Move your foot so that it
covers the brake pedal, when approaching traffic lights, even though they are
green. This way, if the light changes before you get to it, you will be ready
to brake quickly.
After stopping at a red light, remember that when the light changes, before
you go, you need to look quickly to the left and right. Someone else may be
coming who has not noticed that their light is now red. You need to be
prepared to wait for them to clear the intersection before you start.
Otherwise, you could have a wreck. When you are sure that it is safe to go,
start off smoothly.
Blind Intersections - Never pull out into an intersection until it is safe.
Look, look, and look again! Pull your car up slowly until you can see safely.
Keeping in lane - Always keep your car in the correct lane. Use the right
half of your lane if possible.
Use of Horn• Do not use your horn a lot
• Use short taps, not long bursts
• Use it to:
! Warn others that you are backing up
! To let them know you are in their blind spot

Chapter 10, page 5
Right of Way - If you are not sure who goes first, be safe and courteous,
and let the other driver go first. When entering traffic from a side street or a
parking lot, always allow traffic on the main street to go first. Remember
that the right of way is given to you. It is not guaranteed.
Attention - Pay attention to what is going on to the sides and to the rear of
your car by checking your mirrors and moving your head to check for blind
spots.
Time - Take your time. Go at your own pace. Don’t hurry. Drive at or just
below the speed limits. Listen to the trooper’s directions. He will be writing
the whole time, but don’t worry about it. The trooper is checking off what
you are doing right as well as what you need to improve on.
Be friendly, but do not talk too much. Listen and follow directions.
REMEMBER, YOU CAN DO THIS!!
