Art materials. Evaluation form. FINAL PRODUCT: Students will write a simple report about a sea animal. Students will create an art project reflecting the art in Eric Carle’s “House for Hermit Crab” by drawing sea animals on an outline of a hermit crab’s shell. Then librarian will introduce the pre-selected non fiction books on sea animals, pointing out the index for finding individual animals. Teacher and librarian will lead student through a discussion about differences between the fiction and non fiction books. Librarian will introduce the Super 3 poster as a way of planning the class project: an art project decorating a house for a hermit crab. Teacher and librarian will assist individual students in understanding this process. Librarian will introduce the WebQuest online using the presentation cart. Students will locate the student computers in the library where they will be working on their next visit. Teacher will assign student partners to work together gathering information on sea animals. Days 2,3,4 - 30 minutes – Research in the library: Working as partners, students will gather information about sea animals from books and the internet. Students will move between computers and tables with books. They will write several facts about an animal and draw a picture on their fact sheet. Teacher and librarian will assist students in this process as needed. Day 5 – 30 minutes or more as needed - Art project in the classroom: Students will use their fact sheets to share information about sea animals. They will then use art materials to “decorate” a house for a hermit crab. They will draw and add color to a basic outline of a shell to create their house. Librarian and teacher will assist students as needed. Day 6 - 30 minutes – Evaluation in the classroom: Students will share their completed projects and complete an evaluation check list as a review. Notes: Collaboration with the 1st grade teacher is key to this lesson.
