Activity Description: Collaborative Unit with 1st Grade Teacher
Day 1 – 30 minutes -Introduction in the library: librarian will read “House for Hermit
Crab” using the presentation cart. Then librarian will introduce the pre-selected non
fiction books on sea animals, pointing out the index for finding individual animals.
Teacher and librarian will lead student through a discussion about differences between
the fiction and non fiction books. Librarian will introduce the Super 3 poster as a way of
planning the class project: an art project decorating a house for a hermit crab. Teacher
and librarian will assist individual students in understanding this process.
Librarian will introduce the WebQuest online using the presentation cart. Students will
locate the student computers in the library where they will be working on their next visit.
Teacher will assign student partners to work together gathering information on sea
animals.
Days 2,3,4 - 30 minutes – Research in the library: Working as partners, students will
gather information about sea animals from books and the internet. Students will move
between computers and tables with books. They will write several facts about an animal
and draw a picture on their fact sheet. Teacher and librarian will assist students in this
process as needed.
Day 5 – 30 minutes or more as needed - Art project in the classroom: Students will use
their fact sheets to share information about sea animals. They will then use art materials
to “decorate” a house for a hermit crab. They will draw and add color to a basic outline
of a shell to create their house. Librarian and teacher will assist students as needed.
Day 6 - 30 minutes – Evaluation in the classroom: Students will share their completed
projects and complete an evaluation check list as a review.
Notes:
Collaboration with the 1st grade teacher is key to this lesson. Accommodating
the 1 grade student’s attention span with several 30 minute work days and being flexible
with her classroom schedule is essential.
