Overzicht maritiem gelinkte, grote en wederkerende evenementen en tentoonstellingen in Antwerpen voor: 1 2014 COMMEMORATION OF THE CENTENARY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN ANTWERP Peace Bridge 3-5 October 2014. Exhibitions and cultural programme as of spring 2014. From a historical perspective Antwerp has several reasons to commemorate the beginning of World War I in 2014. During the first weeks of the Great War Antwerp was a beacon of hope for the rest of the country. As the “National Redoubt” Antwerp briefly became the temporary capital of Belgium and home to the government, parliament, the army, the royal family and diplomats. The imposing double belt of fortresses prompted a large number of refugees to travel to the city. After the fall of Antwerp they mainly fled to the Netherlands, France and Great Britain. The Peace Centre of the City and Province of Antwerp has joined forces with over fifty partners in Belgium and abroad to put together an exciting cultural programme: A PONTOON BRIDGE AS A PEACE BRIDGE ACROSS THE RIVER SCHELDT A highlight of this commemorative programme is the contemporary reconstruction of the 1914 pontoon bridge, symbolising the connection between the past, present and future. Peace Bridge 3-4-5 October 2014 • Official inauguration on Friday 3 October: VIPs from Belgium and abroad, a peace parade with children, Let’s go Urban dance spectacular, bridge lighting by Artesis Plantijn University College, an audio trail in the pedestrian tunnel under the River Scheldt, and more. • Throughout the weekend the general public will have the opportunity to walk from the right bank to the left bank across the bridge. • Book your ticket on time through our website antwerpen14-18.be. Bridge programme free of charge. Middelheim Museum Signed, the artist. A collection presentation Ernst Barlach, Georg Kolbe, Alexander Archipenko, Jean Arp, Emile-Antoine Bourdelle, Jacques Lipchitz, Ossip Zadkine, Charles Despiau, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Paul Landowski, Rudolf Belling, Aristide Maillol, François Pompon, Arturo Martini, Ewald Mataré, Hermann Hubacher, Frans Claessens, Käthe Kollwitz, Georges Braque, Philippe Wolfers, Emil Filla, Arthur Dupon, Josué Dupon. The lives of these artists in the Middelheim collection, on both sides of the front, was harshly interrupted by the First World War, which cut through their lives and (early) careers much like a blunt axe. Although they have this experience in common the First World War is not a common denominator in their work. Some were permanently scarred by this tragic war and went on to dedicate their entire oeuvre to it while others struggled to break from the rhetoric of aggression and suffering. Käthe Kollwitz’s oeuvre is situated in the eye of the storm. Her artistic development from naturalism to an increasingly expressionistic style and her tragic life have fused in a deeply emotional oeuvre. In this exhibition her sculptures which frequently portray deep suffering and the untold human cost of war are like a case study which merits additional attention. Middelheim Museum will show some exemplary works by this artist, together with the Käthe Kollwitz museums in Cologne and Berlin. Kollwitz’s sculptures succeeded in generating a special interest in modern (sculpture) art among a wide audience. 2 Venue: Braem pavilion Admission: free Timing: 4/05/2014 – 11/01/2015 Opening hours: from October until March: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. I April and September: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. I May and August: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. I June and July: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Website: www.middelheimmuseum.be MAS: Exodus. Fleeing the war At the outbreak of the First World War about one million Belgians fled to the Netherlands and hundreds of thousands of others to Great Britain and France. This exodus is shown in the museum’s so-called “Boulevard”, highlighting the search for a safe haven and finally the return. Timing: 20/5/2014 - April 2015 FotoMuseum Antwerp: Shooting Range - Fotografie in de vuurlinie? How is a war portrayed? The Great War was the first large-scale conflict that was documented with photos. FoMu shows how this was done and how these photos continue to horrify people even today. The exhibition “Shooting Range” highlights the role of the visual media as an “eye” and a weapon, focussing on how our perspective is changed by the impact of photography and film. Our perception, dreams, behaviour and ideas are partly shaped by images. FoMu presents films and photos in their original form, such as newspapers, magazines or postcards. Besides this the exhibition also examines how contemporary photographers interpret this theme. Venue: Waalse Kaai 47 - 2000 Antwerp Admission: 7 euros - 5 euros [discounted rate] - 1 euro [-26] - 0 euro [-12] Timing: 27/6/2014 - 11/11/2014 Website: www.fotomuseum.be Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum In recent years the work of the Antwerp port artist Eugeen Van Mieghem has been internationally rediscovered. His work is often compared to that of artists such as Käthe Kollwitz, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Théophile Steinlen. At the outbreak of the First World War Van Mieghem observed and portrayed the departing refugees and other telling scenes from daily life in a city on the verge of war. His works provide a unique perspective on the horrific experience of Antwerp’s population during the First World War. Venue: Ernest Van Dijckkaai 9 in Antwerp (opposite Steen, next to the Brabo car park) Admission: 4 euros Timing: 1/09/2014 - 30/11/2014 Opening hours: Sunday and Monday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. (closed in July-August and on public holidays). Website: www.vanmieghemmuseum.com Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the House of Literature: The Moderns. Art during the Great War. Before the outbreak of the First World War the futuristic works of Jules Schmalzigaug suggested progress, speed and technology. Rik Wouters’ art was a celebration of vitality and strength. But the war came as a shock. This exhibition shows how artists and writers absorbed this shock during and shortly after the First World War. Some artists and writers fled to the Netherlands and Great Britain, where they discovered foreign movements. Others tried to make sense of life on and behind the front lines. Paul van Ostaijen incorporated his trauma in the experimental poetry collections “Occupied City” and the “Feasts of Fear and Pain”. But the war also left its mark 3 on other writers in Antwerp and Flanders. The exhibition uses the work of six key figures (including Rik Wouters, Emile Verhaeren and Paul van Ostaijen) to evoke an idea of what the war meant for these artists and authors. This exhibition is part of the series “The Moderns” in the Queen Fabiola Hall and is organised by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and the Province of Antwerp together with the House of Literature and the Provincial Museum Emile Verhaeren. Belgian immigrants in America during World War I. In the early twentieth century, in the years running up to the First World War, Belgian migration to the United States peaked. When the German army occupied Belgium in 1914 all trans-Atlantic passenger traffic from Antwerp ground to a halt. Belgian Americans suddenly found themselves cut off from their motherland and in many cases from their family. How did they experience the war? How did they express their solidarity with their country of origin? A presentation in The Shed, the museum’s multipurpose gallery, explores this theme. This is the first exhibition in a multiannual project which the Red Star Line is preparing on migration to the Americas. Venue: Montevideostraat 3 - 2000 Antwerp Admission: free Timing: 28 September 2014 – 6 April 2015 Opening hours: from Tuesday until Sunday, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Website: www.redstarline.org MuHKA: PANAMARENKO UNIVERSUM The exhibition “Panamarenko Universum” provides a fascinating overview of the most important vehicles and objects which the Antwerp artist created. Besides these masterpieces the exhibition also focuses on Panamarenko’s actions in the broadest sense of the word, with his “happening” period – from the occupation of Conscienceplein square to his bold attempt to fly to Sonsbeek in the Netherlands with a zeppelin -, his nature and scientific insights and artistic statements. For the first time an exhibition will zoom in on the artist’s sources of inspiration. "Panamarenko Universum" highlights the versatility and the depth of this inspired artist and magician. This ambitious retrospective reveals the backbone of his body of work as well as providing an insight to the artistic process, with documents, films, drawings, editions and sketches. Among his finest and most intimate portraits are some portraits, which he painted of his family: his two wives – Isabella, who died young and the beautiful Helena - and his children, Clara-Serena‘s cheeky face and the life-size portraits of the older Albert and Nicolaas. He also painted his sisters and brothers in law. And of course, Rubens portrayed himself as a young man travelling with his brother in Italy and later as an older respectable gentleman, when he was already looking death in the eye. The portraits which Rubens painted of his family were not commissioned; he painted them out of love and they served as memories. For the first time these stunning artworks will be shown together and in the place where they belong: the former home of Rubens in Antwerp. 28.03.2015 – 28.06.2015 | RUBENSHUIS | WEBSITE WATER- RANT Maritime festival to celebrate the Antwerp nautical heritage END OF SEPTEMBER 2015 | ’T EILANDJE | WEBSITE WINTER IN ANTWERP 2015 CHRISTMAS MARKET 05.12.2015 - 27.12.2015 GROTE MARKT, HANDSCHOENMARKT, SUIKERRUI AND GROENPLAATS CHRISTMAS MARKET AND ICE-SKATING RINK WITH WINTER VILLAGE 05.12.2015 - 03.01.2016 STEENPLEIN FIREWORKS 31.12.2015 SCHELDT QUAYS 05.12.2015 – 03.01.2016 | WEBSITE 7 2016 OPENING OF THE NEW DEPOT IN THE MUSEUM PLANTIN-MORETUS In 2016, we will open the museum’s new depot, which was realised by NOA architects, with integrated artwork by Benoit van Innis.
