Online Textbook Tip Sheet: Welcome to Kinetic Books! 1. Getting to Your Textbook: To access the textbook, please go to Mr. Liaw’s website at: www.hinsdale86.org/staff/jliaw and click on the “Kinetic Books” Portal link at the top of the page for a shortcut to login in to your book, the homework system, and the webstore. 2. Setting Up Your Book Account: Follow the 1st link to login to your textbook—the first time you login, click on the the “New user? Please register” link. a. Under the School drop down box, pick “Books for HINSDALE”, and then type in the temporary password key that was emailed to you when you bought the book. b. Use your SCHOOL EMAIL (ID#@hinsdale86.org) and PASSWORD so you don’t have one more set of passwords to remember!!! c. Now that you have your online book setup, plug in your headphones & you can check out the nifty animations, video clips, narrations, and interactive simulations to help you better understand physics! 3. Setting Up Your Online Homework Account: a. Follow the 2nd link on Mr. Liaw’s web portal to open the web page to the Online Homework system that accompanies your textbook. b. Go to Mr. Liaw’s Student folder on the the R: drive. Open “My Computer” on the Desktop, open the R: Drive (bottom right), go to “Science”, “jliaw” and finally the “Students” folder. c. Open the file, “Physics Online Homework List” in the Students folder to find your temporary email and password that the system gives you to login to the homework system—you can just copy and paste it into the webpage to get into the system. d. Change Your Password: Click on “Change password” on the left, and then paste in your current temporary password. Then type in a new password that matches closely your school password—the only thing tricky is the homework system needs at least one Upper case letter and one number. So, for example if your password is “daisies”, you could use “Da1s1es” where the number 1 is substituted for the letter “i” (a common password trick). This is annoying but is better for security! e. Change Your E‐mail: Click on “Change e‐mail” on the left and paste in the annoying temporary email the system assigns you. Then type in your SCHOOL email (ID#@hinsdale86.org) so now you are all set!!! Whew!!! 4. Trying your First Online Homework Assignment: a. Click on your course on the left. b. Click on “Syllabus/Assignments” to pull up a list of your assignments. c. Click on “Answer problems” to get started on your first Homework Orientation assignment—only 2 problems! d. You probably want to work through the “Significant Tutorial” lab first for a quick refresher on the rules of significant figures before answering these problems—show your work in your physics notebook to turn in for partial or possibly full credit for breaking it down! 5. Important Tips: a. Note the problem references where in the textbook you can go to get help (1.3.1 means go to chapter 1, section 3). b. Click on “Save” if you want to take a break but not lose your work (after 10‐15 minutes of inactivity, the system logs you out for security). c. Click on “Submit” when you are ready to turn in your answers!!! d. Instant feedback: You will instantly know whether or not you got the answer right‐‐ What’s cool is your teacher will usually give you multiple submissions to get the answer right without any penalty! That way you can practice getting problems right, without fear of silly mistakes and focus on mastery and understanding! e. Scientific Notation & Significant Figures Scientific Notation: To enter small or big numbers, use scientific notation using the following format examples (where "e" stands for exponent): 3.56e4 = 35,600 5.13e‐3 = 0.00513 Significant Figures: If the problem gives the least significant number to only have 3 significant figures, you should give your answer to only 3 significant figures. Example: your calculator spits out 427893.39887288 Right Answers: 4.28e5 OR 428,000 (only 3 significant figures!) Wrong Answers: 4.3e5 OR 4.278e5 OR 427893 etc.
