The ASUC (Associated Students of the University of California) Student Union is committed to
all students and an inclusive campus community, thereby enhancing the student experience at
UC Berkeley. To this end it provides quality services and programs that foster experiential
learning opportunities and ensures a sustainable organization. As a financially self-supporting
department within the Division of Student Affairs, it derives income through student fees, retail
operations, vending, food service and a variety of self-operated units such as the Art Studio,
Events Services, and Lecture Notes On-Line. In addition, the ASUC Student Union provides
student group and community advising, leadership and involvement opportunities and student
development programs through the LEAD Center. Finally, the Student Union provides financial
and accounting services to approximately twenty-five ASUC Government Officers, Graduate
Assembly Executive Officers, approximately 1,200 registered student organizations, and over
35 student publications. The Leadership, Engagement, Advising and Development (LEAD) Center, a department of the
ASUC Student Union, is at the center of student life at UC Berkeley and is the campus
department responsible for facilitating leadership development opportunities in addition to
encouraging student involvement and engagement within the campus community. As a team of
dedicated and committed student affairs professionals, the LEAD Center promotes a studentcentered learning environment by advising and empowering students to pursue their cocurricular interests, to cultivate their leadership skills, and to develop holistically. The LEAD
Center provides services and resources focused on furthering students’ leadership abilities and
personal and professional development—hence positively impacting the holistic learning and
development of all UC Berkeley students. More specifically, the LEAD Center provides advising
and leadership development opportunities to student groups, including 1,000 registered student
organizations (RSOs), over 35 student publications, 65 recognized fraternities and sororities,
student government, SUPERB; the campus programming board, the Student Environmental
Resource Center (SERC), various student cooperative communities, and an array of campuswide student leadership development and training initiatives and programs. These student
groups and communities also include bridges Multicultural Resource Center and the
Recruitment and Retention Centers (RRCs), Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC), Associated
Students of the University of California (ASUC), Graduate Assembly (GA), Cal Debate, the
Committee on Student Fees, UC Rally Committee, and The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF).!

Responsibilities:!
!
OVERVIEW: As part of the LEAD Center team, this critical supervisory position involves planning, developing
and implementing programs, services, activities and processes for students in their nonacademic life at UC Berkeley. More specifically, the Associate Director for Student Government
Advising and Leadership Programs has primary responsibility for collaborating in the creation,
implementation, and assessment of leadership development opportunities, and advising support
and financial services for the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC), the
Graduate Assembly (GA), and their perspective members, senators, and various project/
committee directors, chairs, student staff and volunteers. In addition, the incumbent also has
oversight for the planning and implementation of pre-existing and new campus-wide
programming and activities; including late night new student orientation activities and events,
cultural and educational awareness programs, and other social programs and initiatives that
assist the student government in their effort to connect all students to the greater UC Berkeley
community. The Associate Director for Student Government Advising and Leadership Programs leads a
team of four professional staffs and twenty student staff who have the direct responsibility of
creating and implementing leadership development programs and advising/support services that
attempt to positively impact the holistic development of student government leaders and UC
Berkeley students engaged in various campus activities and leadership programs. In addition,
the associate director will also collaboratively support the advising and programmatic needs of
various ASUC programs including SUPERB, the Student Union Program, Entertainment, and
Recreation Board; which exist as the campus programming entity. As part of the LEAD Center
Leadership Team, this position is also responsible for building collaborative relationships
between the LEAD Center and various internal and external stakeholders, including student
leadership and an array of administrative and academic officials throughout the university and
UC System in general. The Associate Director also oversees the development of procedures and programs that assist
the ASUC and GA in the strategic planning processes, membership and officer transition, and
organizational budget planning and forecasting. STUDENT GROUP ADVISING AND SERVICES: •Utilize student development and leadership practices and theories to design and implement
advising services for students involved with the ASUC, GA, the campus programming board,
and leadership programs. •Serve as the LEAD Center liaison/advisor to ASUC and GA executive branches. •Establish leadership and student development competencies and outcomes to regularly assess
impact of programs and services and make necessary modifications to ensure consistent
alignment with LEAD Center framework/philosophy for student advising and leadership. •Develop and maintain collaborations with campus and community stakeholders to design
advising services that meet the needs of all student communities. SUPERVISION: •Directly supervise and handle all supervisory functions for a team of student government
advising, campus programming and leadership program coordinators. •Ensure staff know and understand applicable policies and procedures as they related to their
respective role on the team. •Collaborate in training, supervising and evaluating a team of coordinators based on department
standards, timelines and procedures. FISCAL MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION: •Manage operational and personnel expenses within an established budget during the fiscal
year for the student government advising and leadership programs unit of the LEAD Center
staff. •Ensure resources are used efficiently and effectively; administrative tasks are handled
appropriately; and if necessary, monthly/annual reports are compiled and submitted according
to due dates. •Oversee the articulation of financial support services to the ASUC, GA and their perspective
affiliates •Collaborate with other LEAD Center staff, the ASUC Student Union Business Development and
Finance Office in overseeing the management of student government finances. ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT: •Advocate for the current needs of students with campus departments, administration and with
community stakeholders •Through collaborative efforts with staff and students, recommend changes to policies,
practices, and procedures that affect the ASUC and GA. •May support the initial negotiation process and drafting of contracts for various campus
performers and other outside vendors. POLICY ARTICULATION: •Provide information and guidance on campus regulations and use of campus facilities to
students, and campus community members. Identify alternatives when not available and
encourage compliance when appropriate. •Articulate laws, institutional polices, and procedures to staff and affiliates of the student
government and other associated programs •Researches best practices and professional standards pertaining to executing student
government advising and support programs, campus programming and leadership programs at
peer and aspirational institutions •Develop strategic and creative methods to incorporate student input in feedback in designing
new student government policies. Communicate campus policies to off-campus stakeholders
and partners.!

Qualifications:!

•At least 3 years of student affairs/higher education experience required. •Prior experience supervising professional staff within a student affairs/higher education setting •Master’s Degree required in college student affairs, counseling, education or related field. •Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques, dialogue facilitation and conflict
mediation •Experience in advising students in planning large-scale campus programs and activities •Knowledge of best practices and professional standards as it pertains to student government
advising, campus programming and leadership development initiatives. •Experience with budgeting and financial decision making •Experience in processes design to improve services and make improvements in student
services setting. •Thorough knowledge of Student Development and Leadership Theories •Experience advising on complex fiscal and budgetary needs and processes •Ability to provide management and leadership to a diverse staff team •Assist in designing, implementing, and facilitating training, leadership, customer service, and
personal development retreats, workshops, and programs for student leaders, full-time staff,
student staff, interns and graduate assistants •Effective written and oral communication skills. •Ability to communicate effectively across various levels of constituency groups. •Manage operational and personnel expenses within an established budget during the fiscal
year for the student government advising and leadership programs. •Ability to analyze financial information and make recommendations to student government
leaders as part of the overall approach to strategic decision-making. •Have the tools and techniques for effective financial management including financial statement
analysis, program analyses, budgeting, forecasting, and overall business model sustainability.!
•Prior experience advising student government and overseeing the creation of campus wide
leadership program initiatives (preferred).
•Experience in financial non-profit management and organization (preferred).!

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range: $70,000-$75,000/annually. For
