Dear friends,
In the last two weeks, so much has happened. I turned one year older, and as I begin my 4 th decade in this world I am so grateful for the life that God has given me.
Each year has been a blessing and the Lord never ceases to surprise me with His great love. To have my birthday on the day before Ash Wednesday was a bonus, as I was able to reflect on the great blessing of my life and then celebrate that day while saying hundreds of times, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” God’s great love brought us into being and will sustain us to the end when, we will realize that for which we were created, eternal union with Him and all our loved ones in that perfect love of heaven. I so long for that day, and at the same time that longing gives each day of life here on earth deeper and more profound meaning as we seek His Kingdom with all our heart.
Also this last week, the Holy Father, Pope Francis arrived in Cuba to sign a joint declaration with Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church, marking an historic accord as the successor of St. Peter has not met with the leader of the Russian Orthodox
Church since the schism, which occurred in the 11 th century. After almost one thousand years, this meeting shows us that nothing is impossible for God and we must never give up hope for reconciliation.
Pope Francis then arrived in Mexico. Like his predecessors St. JPII and Benedict XVI, he sported the sombrero as he arrived and greeted the people. As he began his visit, he celebrated Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe encouraging the
Mexican people as children of Mary to be humble servants, her ambassadors just like
St. Juan Diego, her little son who was in charge of building the temple there, and inviting others to know the wonderful love of her Son. On Sunday, he celebrated Mass with over a million people for the first Sunday of Lent. As he is known to do, in his homily, he diverted from his notes momentarily with words that come from a wise and Holy
Father. He said, “Don’t dialogue with the Devil!” In light of the Gospel and Jesus temptation in the desert, we need to learn from Him, the Holy Father said. “Jesus did not use His own words,” said Pope Francis, “but rather the words of Sacred Scripture.”
The enemy knows our weaknesses and this is how he started with Eve in the garden in that conversation where he started to bring thoughts of doubt and confusion which led to the Fall. Each time we engage in that conversation, when we entertain the doubt, fear, or temptation, we also fall if we fail to turn to God and ask for His help. Christ, the Word made flesh, abides in us. It is His word that gives us strength to counter as we place our trust in Him and His plan for us. God always wants us to flourish and to know and grow in the blessed relationship that Jesus has called us to as beloved children of our Heavenly Father.
Our Lenten pilgrimage prepares us to renew our baptismal promises, to know more profoundly who we are as beloved children of God, and to celebrate that truth with great joy on the day of Jesus resurrection. I close with Pope Francis’ final words in that same homily.
We have chosen Jesus, not the evil one; we want to follow in his footsteps, even though we know that this is not easy. We know what it means to be seduced by money, fame, and power. For this reason, the Church gives us the gift of this Lenten season, invites us to conversion, offering but one certainty: he is waiting for us and wants to heal our hearts of all that tears us down. He is the God who has a name: Mercy . His name is our wealth, his name is what makes us famous, his name is our power, and in his name we say once more with the Psalm: “You are my God and in you I trust.” Let us repeat these words together: “You are my God and in you I trust.”
In this Eucharist, may the Holy Spirit renew in us the certainty that his name is
Mercy, and may he let us experience each day that “the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus,” knowing that “with Christ and in Christ joy is constantly born anew.”
In His Most Sacred Heart,
Fr. Jack D. Shrum

We will begin the Lenten Season on Ash Wednesday February 22nd. While many look forward to this time for opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal, quite often many of us see it as a liturgical season to dread. We focus on “What am I going to give up?” “How long can I live without whatever it is I am going to give up?” “How many more days before I don’t have to give up whatever it is that I am giving up?” Who wouldn’t dread a liturgical season with such a narrow focus?
Over these next few weeks, we are all encouraged to begin reflecting anew on the real purpose of Lent, the power such a season can be for us, and the real potential for a deeper commitment to our Catholic faith, and most important, a deeper communion of love with God. Such a deeper understanding could give us a new attitude for Lent.
Baptism is one of Lent’s foundational focus. At the Easter Vigil, the catechumens (referred to as “the elect”) will be fully initiated as Catholics through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
It is no coincidence that on Easter Sunday, all the baptized will renew our baptismal promises. Note that I said we are going to “renew” our baptismal promises and not merely “repeat” them. “Repeating” simply recalls something that happened in the past. “Renew” is entirely different. “Renewing” our baptismal promises recognizes something still foundational in our life.
Renewing our baptismal promises opens our hearts to God’s grace. Grace reveals God’s great love for us and
God’s purpose for our life. This great divine love energizes our own love and leads us to a deeper commitment to live these promises more faithfully. Easter is one time in the liturgical year for us to remember that we are baptized once for a lifetime and not merely once in a lifetime . Lent is the time set aside to prepare us to make that renewal faithfully.
Our world, our country and our Church all need us to rediscover the beauty and power of baptism and our call to be co-redeemers with the Lord Jesus Christ. Our baptism calls us to a life of holiness that reveals Jesus’ great and merciful love to all humanity and all creation. Our faith also commits us to restoring the human community and all creation to a life of justice, peace, and solidarity.
In the next article, we will continue this opportunity to renew our understanding of Lent so that we can more fully renew our baptismal promises at Easter. From USCCB W ebsite
During the season of Lent in the Scriptures, we see that Jesus is in the desert. The Church asks us to refrain from decorating our churches with flowers. Please assist us in keeping sacred environment during this Lenten season by NOT bringing any flowers to adorn the statues until after March 27 th . Thank you for your assistance.

The Second Sunday of Lent
“This is my beloved Son; listen to Him.”
Luke 9:28b-36
Rights and Responsibilities
As human beings, we have the right to live and grow in peace. Because we have that right, we have the responsibility to make sure others enjoy the same opportunity, too. God made a promise to Abraham and his descendants; God and Abraham have a responsibility to live up to that promise. Paul reminds us that “our citizenship is in heaven.” God loves all people—all citizens of that heavenly home—equally.
What kinds of rights and responsibilities does that citizenship imply? How are we called to use our own unique gifts for the betterment of others?

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE
Your love of God is best shown in your care for others. We still need people willing to bring Communion to the sick at home, in a retirement home, and at the hospital. After a short training and mentoring with a current minister, you are assigned to serve only a couple hours out of each month. We also need drivers to bring others to services and back home afterwards. This takes an up-to-date license to drive and a registered and insured vehicle. Call Mary Ann, 425-277-6208 for more info or to volunteer for any tasks within the church and community.
