Spring 2015 Volume 11, Issue 1 St. Anthony School Alumni & Friends Newsletter Meet Our Principal, Mr. Michael Cantu With one year fully under his belt and the second one fast approaching a close, Michael Cantu is as confident as ever about the direction St. Anthony School is heading. From the remodel of the computer lab funded by last year’s Fund a Need at the Auction, to the implementation of the Olweus Bully Prevention program, to the introduction of the Singapore Math program at all grade levels and the reintroduction of the Slingerland writing and reading program into all primary classrooms, St. Anthony School is keeping up with the changing landscape of education while retaining its core mission: to educate students to be joyous, loving and Christ-centered people, capable of serving others and bettering the world. Mr. Cantu is in his eighteenth year as a Catholic School principal. Prior to administration, he was a Catholic High School teacher, having taught AP Government and Economics, World History, Church History and New Testament. He received his BA in History from UCLA, his teaching credential from Loyola Marymount, his MA in School Administration from the University of San Francisco and his post-masters advanced certificate in administration from the University of Portland. He continues to pursue personal growth as a school administrator, having completed a recent program in Catholic School leadership at the University of Notre Dame this past summer. He currently serves as a member of the Archdiocesan Executive Principals Committee. Continued on the next page... Meet Our New Principal Continued... “I’m an advocate for fostering an environment of strong academics, student support and the integration of creativity into the curriculum. I myself am an artist and work in oils and watercolors.” St. Anthony School is one of the few Catholic Schools left with a dedicated Art Class, alongside PE, Music, Technology and Library. Last year, the focus was on math; this year it is writing. “Our primary goal is to improve instruction in this area by studying and adopting a rigorous and cohesive curriculum so that our students will grow stronger in this important aspect of their education. While the adoption will be year-long, the overall effort will be on-going.” In addition to the academics, a Lego robotics club has been formed along with a second Mandarin Chinese club to meet the demand. A Science and a Spanish language club have also been running successfully for several years. Future clubs include plans for a Chess and a Speech & Debate club. “St. Anthony School is a great school and has been a leader in Catholic education for nearly 90 years. We will continue to build upon this.” Distinguished Alumni 2015 This year’s distinguished alumni from St. Anthony School was Theresa Marie Strutynski (Ramseth). Theresa graduated from St. Anthony School in 1978, went on to Kennedy and then the University of Washington and Antioch University, earning a BS & MA in Psychology. She worked for 15 years as a Social Worker and 4 years as a Child & Family Counselor for Catholic Community Services. You can still find her weekends at St. Anthony Parish in the Family Choir as Guitarist and Cantor. Theresa was presented the award on January 24th by principal Michael Cantu. Alumni Reception 800 North 10th Place Suite E Renton You’re Invited! Friday, May 29th 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. No need to RSVP Complimentary wine & hors d’oeuvres will be served. Alumni News The first day of school was especially exciting for Gabriel Rogers, who was entering Kindergarten. Gabriel is a 3rd generation student. His grandparents, Michael and Maureen (Walkama) Blodgett graduated in 1962 and their daughter Christina (Blodgett) Rogers, Gabriel’s mother, graduated in 2002. When Michael became a teacher, he started his career at St. Anthony School and Maureen currently works in the library. Christina indicated that she wanted Gabriel to attend St. Anthony School so that he would receive the same great education that she and her parents received. She believes that the St. Anthony School faculty, staff and parents are a strong faith community dedicated to their students. James Buchanan (Class of 2013) qualified for the "iron man" this past spring, allowing him to compete in all eight individual events at the state championships for the Lindbergh High School Swim Team. It was only the third time in school history that a student has accomplished this feat. At the state championships, James won the state 100 backstroke and broke the Lindbergh High School record in the process. He also took 3rd in the 200 IM. Our Remodeled Computer Lab Making a Difference Annual Appeal The Making a Difference Annual Appeal (MKD) is one of only three fundraisers the school has to help keep tuition as affordable as possible. As an alumni, we ask that you consider making a donation to the MKD to support the students that are walking through the same halls and sitting in the same classrooms you did. Any amount can and will “Make a Difference.” You can make an online donation to the MKD at the following website: https://sasr.ejoinme.org/mkd2014-2015 or Send your donation to the school C/O The 2014-2015 MKD.
