The cause of the conflict described is that Emilys’ taxes were cancelled forever after her fathers’ death. Emily refused to reply to her tax notices. The Board of Aldermen held a special meeting, including her, concerning what should be done. 2. Reading check pg 863 a. The Board of Aldermen pay a visit to Miss Emily in order to reach a mutual agreement on her paying the taxes. 3. Reading check pg 865 a. The men decide to break into the cellar because they find that the source of an unruly odor. 4. Literary Analysis pg 866 a. Emily, when her father died, she refused to acknowledge the fact. She denied he was dead and went on for three days insisting nothing was wrong. The townspeople went to her, day after day, to attempt to persuade Emily that her father really had passed, and to let them in to tend to the body. Robinson 2 5. Critical viewing pg 869 a. The portrait in the book had matched the mental image I had seen of Miss Emily from the way she was described. 6. Literary analysis pg 869 a. The people broke down the door to because nobody had gone into that room of Miss Emily’s’ in nearly forty years. The door had been sealed shut. Questions pg 874: 2a. When the judge tried to get Emily to pay her taxes, she kicks them out and firmly states that she doesn’t have to pay her taxes due to previous events. 2b. This incident reveals that the relationship between Miss Emily and the town isn’t close at all. They were always very distant and never within a close community. 4a. Miss Emily is accused of killing her father. The cashier was curious to know why she bought it. Robinson 3 4b. The problem the townspeople notice is that Emilys’ father died right after she bought the arsenic. 4c. They believe she killed her father with the arsenic. 5a. Homer wants to marry Emily. 5b. Their relationship is ended when Emily wa accused of killing her father. 6a
