Frankenstein – Romantic/Gothic Horror Stories

We spent a fair amount of time in class discussing the Romantic and Gothic elements of both Frankenstein and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner . Now you will create your own story in this same genre. You may use any of the handouts you have, as well as your notes. There is no minimum or maximum length, as long as your story is long enough to have a clear beginning, middle, and end and to include descriptive Gothic and

Romantic imagery.

Mary Shelley also demonstrated the influence of her father by including elements of the Enlightenment in her novel. This juxtaposition also served to heighten the

Romantic and Gothic elements in the story, giving the reader more vivid imagery and a heightened sense of terror. You may choose to include elements from the Enlightenment as well, but you must include elements from the Romantic/Gothic genre. You must also include at least 1 allusion to either Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Paridise Lost, or

Frankenstein .

As horror films would not be nearly as frightening without a potent musical score, for extra credit, you may choose to score your story with either existing music you find or music you compose.

On Monday, November 16, we will be sharing these stories in class. Sharing is not mandatory unless you want to get credit for a musical score.
