Course Description: Students will continue to work on the vocabulary and sentence structures needed to communicate in real-life context. Students will expand listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Spanish while investigating the culture of the Hispanic people. Course Objective: Lección preliminar - Mis amigos y yo - Florida Review material already learned be able to talk about yourself and your friends: descriptions, likes and dislikes, feelings, where you go and what you do. Review verb conjugation and sentence structure, including stem-changing verbs and using an infinitive. Investigate the Hispanic heritage of Florida. Unidad 1: Vamos de viaje y de vacaciones – Costa Rica Learn vocabulary needed to talk about travel preparations, traveling by air and staying in a hotel. Compare Costa Rica and Minnesota, especially outdoor tourism. Use direct and indirect object pronouns appropriately. Conjugate regular verbs and some irregular verbs in the preterite. Use the preterite to describe events that happened in the past. Practice asking and answering information questions. Role play being a tourist going on an air flight. Write a post card about a trip, real or imaginary, that you took to Costa Rica. Unidad 2: Somos saludables – Argentina Talk about sports and athletes. Discuss ways to stay healthy. Investigate world soccer the World Cup, and Argentina’s soccer history. Continue to learn the preterite tense to talk about things that happened in the past. Use the demonstratives to point out things. Describe your daily routine using reflexive verbs. Tell what you are doing at the moment by conjugating verbs in the present progressive. Create a skit of siblings or roommates trying to share a daily routine. Course Expectations: These expectations and consequences have been developed by past students of señora Casareto. They have been created to help us all have a fun, enjoyable, and productive experience in our Spanish class!! :-) 1. Be respectful. 2. Be on time. (Tardiness = 5 point deduction after two/CHS Attendance Policy) Definition: Not being in the room when the bell rings. 3. Participate in class. 4. Listen when other people are talking!!!! 5. Bring necessary materials. 6. Speak with permission. 7. Follow directions first time given. 8. Do your own work. NO copying!! 9. NO CHEATING!!! You will receive ZERO credit if caught! :-( 10. Keep hands, feet, objects, etc. to yourself. Attendance: ATTEND CLASS! We will be following the CHS Attendance Policy. (Three unexcused tardies are equivalent to one unexcused absence.) **Pagers, cell phones, CD players, headphones, games and other electronic devices MUST be turned off and out of sight until I give you permission to use your device at the end of the hour. Violation of this policy will result in the confiscation of the device. Hats must be off and in your backpack during class. Notes: *No blatant gum chewing! *Keep food, etc. out of your mouth when speaking! Do not let food, etc. be a distraction. *No cans – only bottles allowed! *Check the floor for garbage before you leave – be respectful of our classroom OR there will be no more food/beverages allowed in class!! :-( *Please do not write on the desks! ¡gracias! / Perfume, lotion, etc. *Sub days: If the substitute teacher has to leave your name for lack of respect, not following directions, etc., you will ZERO credit for work done in class that day. Behavior/Consequences: Consequences for not adhering to the stated expectations are as follows: 1. Verbal Warnings (2-cumulative)/Tardies (2): If you disrupt class, are not following along, participating, etc., I will give you one warning. If the problem happens a second time, you will lose 5 points off your weekly participation grade. Again, after 2 verbals or 2 tardies you will lose 5 points. Your parent/guardian will also be notified. 2. Removal to the hallway for a “cooling-off” time. / Parent contact. 3. Immediate removal from class to Principal’s Office/Re-entry process. 4. Textbook, writing utensils, folder, paper. *On-line resources at classzone.com *The World Language Department is in compliance with the CHS Academic Honesty/Plagiarism Policy: The use of on-line translators is prohibited for direct translations (more than three words in a row that are not your own = plagiarism.) **An error doesn’t become a mistake until you refuse to correct it!! GRADING Grading System: A. Daily Assignments/Participation Points: 1. Daily assignments are given so that you have the chance to independently practice the materials learned in class. Your assignments are expected to be neat, legible, and done in accordance to the directions given by señora Casareto. They must also be completed and ready to be checked/reviewed at the beginning of the hour on the due date. All unexcused late work will automatically be penalized. STANDARD: ½ of total points for the missing assignment will be deducted. Make-up work for excused absences must be completed within two school days of the absence (general rule of thumb). 2. You are graded on your oral participation in Spanish so that you are encouraged to use the language. TEN participation points are awarded on a weekly basis for oral participation in the Spanish language. Please make it your goal to earn at least TWO participation points per day. These points must be made-up if you are absent. NOTE: 4 day week = 8 participation points, etc. B. Quizzes: Quizzes are given frequently to evaluate if you are comprehending the materials being presented in class. You are allowed to retake one quiz per semester (50 points or less). C. Exams: Exams are given at the end of each unit lesson to evaluate if you are able to correctly apply the materials learned in the unit. Make up of quizzes and exams must be done within one week of the absence (general rule of thumb). Advisory is a perfect time for make up work! Otherwise, you may make an appointment with me for either before or after school. NOTES: *You will be given many opportunities to earn extra credit in our class. You can earn up to 20-25 points per semester (adjustable). *You need at least a C- or better to continue on to the next level in Spanish.
