Course Description
The Naval History Seminar is a general introduction to the literature of naval
history and a (necessarily hasty) chronological survey of major naval actions from
Salamis (480 BC) to Operation Sea Lords (1968). We will also consider the development
of the strategies, tactics, and doctrines of naval warfare from the galley to modern times.
There is a surprisingly extensive and rich literature of naval warfare and we will not be
able to consider all the authors or events that one might wish.
The readings are intended to do two things. They help to provide a chronological
framework for the evolution of naval warfare from the galley to the nuclear submarine.
They also give us an opportunity to review some of the classics that, in addition to
explicating the history, serve as primary documents because of their importance in the
process.
Goals
I hope that this reading seminar engenders in each student an interest in conflict at
sea and control of the world’s waterways as a means of viewing major developments in
western history. The course should provide a general knowledge of the types of maritime
warfare and its development over time. It should provide a springboard for students with
a deeper interest in history to conduct further study.
Each student should develop an understanding of the major themes or trends (and
the policy issues they presented) of naval history. To do this, one must become familiar
with the historical details, the sequence of major events, the relevant geography, and the
key individuals. Students will also have an opportunity to become familiar with the
broader literature for future consideration.
Requirements and Grading
Reading and Discussion
The class will meet on Tuesday from 5:10 to 7:00 pm in Phillips Hall, Room 329.
Each student is expected to read a major work on the period, event, or person under
consideration (the “Primary Book”) every week. One or more student(s) will read another
work (the “Alternate Book”) relating to the same topic. Come to class prepared to discuss
the assigned primary work and the period or topic addressed. The success of the course
depends on your active participation.
533569929
The first part of each session will be a short (hopefully not more than 30 minutes)
lecture about the chronology of the conflict, events, or person under study. I will post the
associated PowerPoint slides on Blackboard before each class so you can print them off
either in a six-to-a-page version for note taking or in a single large version for clarity in
the case of maps, etc.
The next part of the class will be devoted to student presentations (approximately
10 minutes each) with respect to the Primary and Alternate Books (see discussion of
Book Commentaries, below). The remainder of the class will consist of a discussion of
the weekly subject, based on the Primary and Alternate Books.
Each week we will focus on one or more different battles, campaigns, types of
naval warfare, leaders, strategists, or strategic theories relating to naval warfare. The
literature raises several interesting questions. Just what is meant by naval warfare? What
forms does it take: decisive engagements involving battle fleets, e.g., Lepanto, Trafalgar,
Midway; attacks on enemy commerce, such as the German U-boat offensives in World
Wars I and II or the blockades employed in the War of 1812, the Napoleonic Wars, the
Civil War, and World War II; amphibious operations, like the Persian attack at
Thermopylae leading to Salamis, the allied assault on Gallipoli, and the American
campaign in the Pacific; defensive operations, e.g., American activities in the
Revolutionary War; power projection, such as the Mexican War, the Spanish-American
War, and the Gulf War; and asymmetric warfare of the sort conducted during the
American Revolution and in Vietnam? Are there others? Can naval warfare ever really be
decisive in a major conflict? How do primarily naval powers engage continental
enemies? How have the weapons of warfare at sea changed? Are there are immutable
principles that govern war at sea or are the lessons derived from the Greeks or the Age of
Sail merely historical relics? What is the role of the individual leader in determining the
outcome? Technology? Intelligence? The ordinary seaman?
Prepared Book Commentaries.
Each week one student (or more depending on ultimate class size) will be asked to
present the Primary Book for the week. That student should prepare and distribute a short
(five double-spaced pages) commentary on or review of the book. It should contain a
succinct summary of the book’s major arguments and an appraisal of the writer’s
persuasiveness. Please e-mail, (using the Blackboard Communication-E-mail-All Users
facility) a copy to each member of the class 48 hours before the class meeting. The
presenter is to give a brief (10 to 15 minute) talk outlining the key points in the book, the
“lessons” we can draw from the book and the events it describes, and the presenter’s
evaluation of the book. (Do not be afraid to take issue with the authors – but be prepared
to support your positions.) On books that include compiled materials, describe the range
of materials, and then focus on a few that raise issues you want to discuss. On a
monograph, describe it generally and then identify some specific issues or questions.
These will be used to frame the discussion of the class session, so be thoughtful in your
selection.
Similarly, every week one or more other students will read the Alternate Book(s)
and make and distribute a similar oral and written presentation. The Alternate Books are
not required reading for the rest of the class (and the person responsible for the Alternate
Page 2 of 31

does not have to read the Primary text). The selected books will provide the substantive
input for our discussion.
During the course of the semester, each student will be responsible for presenting
one Primary and one Alternate Book. We will assign the books during the first class.
Major Paper - Due 29 April 2008
Each student is to write a fifteen page paper addressing an issue that emerges
from one of the readings during the course. The paper is not intended to be a major
research project, but the presentation of your analysis of one of the topics under
discussion. You should, however, rely on primary and secondary sources to support your
argument. The paper is due in my box in the history department office on Tuesday, 29
April 2008.
The paper is to be submitted in hard copy (typed, double-spaced, double-sided.
Use 12 point Times New Roman or Courier type, with margins of 1.5” on the left and 1”
on the other borders), rather than by e-mail, at the beginning of class in your discussion
section during the week of 7 April. You are to use proper history citation format, i.e., use
the footnote format specified in the Chicago Manual, not MLA or in-text citations. (Read
sections 16.1 – 16.45, posted on Blackboard for a discussion of the citation system and
the Paper guidelines and footnote formats for examples. Both are posted on Blackboard.).
Cite your interviews as well as course materials. Be sure to keep notes of your interviews
and keep a copy of your paper. Your paper will be graded on the extent to which it
conforms to the assignment, your ability to articulate and substantiate a sophisticated
thesis by facts (with citations), and your writing (including spelling and grammar).
Proofread carefully. Do not rely on spell-check software.
Be sure to turn the paper in on time. Your grade will be lowered one letter grade
for every day the paper is late.

Academic Integrity and Citation Procedure
While the success of this class ultimately depends on an effective interaction
among students, all written work is to be done individually.
Academic integrity is essential to the success of this educational experience, as
indeed to any academic enterprise. All students should read and understand the
University Code of Academic Integrity.
Be sure to use proper citations for all your authority. Use the Chicago Manual
footnote format that is used in historical writing. You can rely on either:
 Turabian, Kate. A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations
6th ed. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1996.
 The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and
Publishers. 15th ed. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 2003.

A set of Paper Guidelines and footnote formats is posted on Blackboard. Consult
it.
Disabilities
Any student who believes that he or she will be unable to perform the assigned
work because of a disability should contact me as soon as possible. To receive an
accommodation on the basis of disability, a student must provide notice and proper
documentation to the Office of Disability Support Services, Marvin Center 242 (9948250). Accommodations will be made solely on the basis of recommendations from the
DSS Office.
Pagers and Cell Phones (and other objects that go “ring” in the night)
Please turn them off during class, except in the case of a genuine emergency.
Notify me before class if you are expecting such an emergency call. Having your
communication device go off in class (without my prior approval) may result in lowering
your course grade ½ step.
Office Hours – Phillips 303:
My office hours are Tuesday from 9:00 to 10:00 am and Thursday from 4:00 to
5:00 pm and I am happy to meet with you at other times to discuss any questions related
to the course material. Please see me after class or send me an e-mail to arrange an
appointment.
Individual Class Descriptions and Assignments
A copy of the syllabus is available on Blackboard. Any readings other than those
in the required books will be posted in the Outline part of Blackboard. Other useful
material may be posted from time to time. I will also use your official GW e-mail address
to send out course materials. Be sure your account is operative (and not overfull).
Class Schedule (Subject to Change at the Discretion of the Instructor)
Week One: Introduction and Classical Naval Warfare (Pre-1000)
Tuesday, 15 Jan. 2008 – Class 1: Ancient Naval Warfare – Salamis (480 BC)
General Context:
I would strongly recommend that, unless you have a good grounding in military
and naval history generally, that you obtain a copy of each of the following books to
serve as a general survey of naval history and to illuminate the geography of military
history. There is no perfect survey and fewer really good atlases with the scope we desire
(for example, Craig Symond’s Historical Atlas of the U.S. Navy is excellent, but limited
to the American Navy):
 Potter, E. B., Roger Fredland, and Henry Hitch Adams. Sea Power: A Naval
History. 2nd ed. Annapolis, Md.: Naval Institute Press, 1981.
 Collins, C. Collins Atlas of Military History. 1st U.S. ed. New York:
HarperCollins, 2006.
For those who feel particularly behind the curve in naval terminology and things
nautical generally, I would recommend one or more of the following:
 Reynolds, Clark G. Navies in History. Annapolis, Md.: Naval Institute Press,
1998.

 Lavery, Brian. Ship: The Epic Story of Maritime Adventure. 1st American ed.
London: New York, 2004.
 Woodman, Richard. The History of the Ship: The Story of Seafaring from the
Earliest Times to the Present Day. Updated ed. London: Conway Maritime, 2005.
Primary Book
 Starr, Chester G. The Influence of Sea Power on Ancient History. New York:
Oxford University Press, 1989. (This is a very short overview of the topic for the first
week)
Alternate Book
 Strauss, Barry S. The Battle of Salamis: The Naval Encounter That Saved Greece-and Western Civilization. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2004.
 Rodgers, William Ledyard. Greek and Roman Naval Warfare: A Study of
Strategy, Tactics, and Ship Design from Salamis (480 B.C.) to Actium (31 B.C.).
Annapolis: Md. United States Naval Institute, 1937. Reprint, 1964.
(This book is out of print, however, you can obtain a copy from many libraries or
an on-line service such as Advanced Book Exchange (http://www.abebooks.com/),
Alibris (http://www.alibris.com/), or Amazon which has a service for used books as well
as new (http://www.amazon.com/books-used-bookstextbooks/b?ie=UTF8&node=283155). Several of the books, particularly the alternates
are also out of print, however, copies may be obtained from libraries or one of the listed
sources. While I don’t endorse any specific service, I have had particularly good luck
with ABE over the years. On any of the used book services, read the description carefully
to ensure that it is the edition and version you want and be careful to check the shipping
price and timeline and make sure that the actual vendor is in the United States (both for
time and cost of shipment).

Week Two: Medieval Warfare at Sea (1000 –1450, and to 1570 in the Mediterranean)
Tuesday, 22 Jan. 2008 – Class 2: Medieval Warfare – Lepanto (1570)
Primary Book
 Guilmartin, John Francis, Jr. Gunpowder and Galleys: Changing Technology and
Mediterranean Warfare at Sea in the Sixteenth Century. London: Cambridge
University Press, 1974. (This book is hopelessly out of print, a copy is available on
Blackboard.)

Reprint, 1967.
Discussion Topic
Is Guilmartin correct when he asserts that the Mediterranean in the sixteenth
century was just different from other, later theaters? Or is it just a variant of a broader
theme. Consider the fleet as a support for land-based operations – power projection.
Decisive battle as a defensive strategy

Discussion Topics
Were the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar "decisive battles," i.e., did they result
in the defeat of the French national effort? Was Austerlitz decisive, in the sense that it
ended opposition to Napoleon?
Why was the British Royal Navy seemingly so superior to the French (which
arguably had better ships)? Was Nelson decisive in the Napoleonic Wars? Was the Royal
Navy?
How do the Napoleonic Wars compare to earlier, elephant-whale conflicts, such
as the Peloponesian War and the American Revolution? What are the similarities and
differences? How did the French try to defeat the British? How did the British respond?
Is there really a fundamental difference between a naval power and a land power?
How can a naval power confront (or defend itself against) a land power? Vice versa?
