As we begin a new year and our final months preparing for FCAT, take a moment to think about how YOU best work. Do you work best when you are hungry, tired, discouraged, and can’t seem to succeed? I think some of us might feel we do respond better when we are under pressure. And I do not disagree that some amount of pressure is good for pushing ourselves to succeed. But I think you would also agree that we all have ‘breaking points’ where pressure no longer encourages our hearts but tears at our spirit. This is especially true for young children. As our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students go into their final months of preparing for FCAT, please join us in making every effort to apply pressure gently with the greatest of care, realizing that children need to be believed in, encouraged, and have enough success so they see the next task as not only possible but within their reach. Work with your child’s teacher as a partner in this effort, and let us make this the year that brings each child a renewed sense of personal success and accomplishment. Isn’t that what we all want? I am personally pledging to make sure I do everything I can to clear the decks for teachers and provide them with the encouragement they also need. Now, I would like to take the chance congratulate students and staff members. to Our Teacher of the Year is Debbie Swilley. Mrs. Swilley has taught at Chiefland Elementary School for over 25 years! She recently has brought such meaningful programs to the school as Pennies for Peace. This is a worldwide program that encourages students to raise money for organizations to build schools. The program creates in her students a gratitude for the educational opportunity our country offers! Our ESP (Educational Support Personnel) of the Year is Sarah Fries. Mrs. Fries has been working at CES for 16 years. This year she serves as a VPK Assistant and absolutely loves the position. As she puts it, it has given her a chance to go through you second childhood!. Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Winner! Victoria Hutson took home the prize and will now move on to the District Spelling Bee to be held Friday, January 7th.. Gerardo De Paz was our runner up. Congratulations to both of these students! We also want to thank Roxanne Simpson for working so hard with the chorus students to put together our Christmas Program. We had three performances! This was a longer program this year and had the addition of the Bells. It was great to enjoy the show through our new sound system. You could hear the children’s voices! And a BIG Thank You to BJ Whistler for organizing our first Movie Night. The outdoor movie was Polar Express and it was a gift from PTO to the school. We had many staff members who came out on the Saturday night to help. Thank you to: Robert Lowyns, David Sweet, Kristine Nichols, Janie Jacobs, Maura Ciasulli, Nicole Fernandez, Chad Brock, Kari Wasson, Katie Godwin, David Petty, and Michelle Barron. It was a fun night to snuggle up and watch a big show on the lawn. ;o)) For our Family Literacy Night on January 20th at 6:00 PM we will be hosting a Florida Children’s Author. His name is Timothy A.
