Found Poetry Assignment
You were asked to “chase” certain symbols by finding particular quotes that you
found related the symbol to the themes. It was suggested that you find at least
two quotes per chapter. Now here is the assignment that you should complete
using those quotes. If you still haven't found the quotes, then you are already
behind.
 You should have at least two from each chapter, but make sure that the
quotes connect the symbol to the theme.
 Use those quotes to create a poem. The poem should be a summation of the
symbol’s purpose in the novel and/or how it relates to the theme. You may
personify the symbol and give it a voice if you so desire.
 You should use 10-12 quotes (or paraphrases of them) to create your poem.
 DO NOT simply string the quotes together and please note that you may also
need to change the wording of the quote or even paraphrase the quote to
allow it to work in the poem.
 Your grade will take into consideration your ability to choose meaningful
quotes, your ability to use them to accomplish the assignment (summarize
the symbol’s purpose in the novel and/or how it relates to the theme.)
creativity and originality.
 Please make sure that you list all your quotes with the chapter and page
numbers. Then write the poem on another sheet of paper.
 Art work that fits the poem is strongly encouraged and will be considered in
the originality grade. I would like original artwork, but computer generated
artwork or clipart will be acceptable as long as it is used in an original way. I
also encourage you to use color. The poem does not have to be typed; it
could be written in a particular way to carry part of the meaning of the poem.
Be creative and original!

Here is an example of what you should do: This comes from the play Macbeth.
Words/phrases selected during reading Macbeth:
"Fair is foul, and foul is fair"
"bloody execution"
"Sleep no more"
"The earth was feverous and did shake"
"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow"
"There's daggers in men's smiles"
"fruitless crown"
"blood will have blood"
"The secret'st man of blood"
"make our faces vizards to our hearts"
"disease"
"All hail, Macbeth"
The poem is written from Macduff's point of view after he has killed Macbeth.
"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow-Yes, there will be a tomorrow for my country,
Brave Macbeth! With bloody execution I
Have secured her tomorrows. With your death
I have given back to her people sleep and rest
For with your rule they were beset with fears,
They could trust no one, they could sleep no more
For fear that the secret'st man of blood
Would seek for security in their deaths.
Scotland was afflicted with a crippling disease
In your reign. It seemed that even the ground
Was repelled by your unnatural deeds; the earth
Was feverous and did shake. Truth, honesty,
Trust and honor hid and too long we made
Our faces vizards to our hearts, fearing
There were daggers in men's smiles, suspecting
Fair [was] foul, and foul [was] fair.
But your bloody instructions redounded on you,
And as you said, 'Blood will have blood.'
For my family's blood, for Duncan's blood,
For the blood of Banquo and other innocents,
I have had your blood. The crown you desired
Has been a fruitless crown, and all that you
Bloodily purchased is lost. All hail, Macbeth!"
