NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INFORMATION The National Honor Society is more than just academic recognition. It bases guidelines for membership selection on four main areas: • • • • Scholarship Service Leadership Character Scholarship: Students who have a 93.000, or higher, grade point average meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character. Service: This quality is the voluntary contribution(s) you make to the school or community, without direct financial or material compensation. The obligation of service does not end with selection, but continues after induction into the local chapter. Leadership: Student leaders are viewed as resourceful, dependable, positive people who are able to solve problems and contribute ideas. These student leaders are involved in and promoters of school activities. Character: Students of good character uphold principles of morality and ethics; are cooperative; demonstrate high standards of honesty and reliability; show courtesy, concern and respect for others; and generally maintain a good and clean lifestyle. Faculty Council: The role of the 5-member Faculty Council is to follow the national procedures of the selection process to determine applicants who are eligible for membership in the school NHS chapter. NHS Faculty Advisor: Each high school chapter has a faculty advisor. Her/his role is to supervise the membership selection process, make sure that both the national and local guidelines are followed, act as an advocate for the students, promote chapter activities, maintain chapter records, and hold and attend all meetings and functions. The chapter advisor is a non-voting member of the Faculty Council. Principal: Mr. Rocco Petrone, as principal of Hazleton Area High School, is the arbitrating official should there be an appeal regarding the membership selection process.
