2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS SEGMENT ONE: A. Show Tease & B. Global Golf Adventure Opening animation :28 C. OC Mark Rolfing (ID: Mark Rolfing) Hi everyone and welcome to Global Golf Adventure Chicago. For me putting this show together has been like fulfilling a life long bucket list. As a kid growing up just outside of Chicago I never dreamed I would have some of the experiences in this city like you will see in the next half hour. D. Chicago overview VO: Like having a private boat tour cruising on the Chicago River. Or how about spending a morning at iconic Wrigley Field with Dustin Johnson and my childhood hero Ernie Banks. Or walking the turf at sacred Soldier Field with one of the best kickers in the National Football League, or simply sitting down and talking with a friend about the town we both love. OC MRolfng Chicago is sometimes referred to as the second city, but really its second to none. Come along for the ride, and you’ll see why this is my kind of town. VO: Chicago Overview Chicago is an amazing place and in so many ways, a city of wonderful contrasts. Even though it is located in the heartland of our country, water is one of its most dominant features. The lakefront is spectacular and is home to an incredible array of attractions and activities. Chicago is the third most populated area in America, even so it sure doesn’t have that feel. OC Michael Jordan its a big town that doesn’t seem big. You know, it’s a New York city that you can drive in. VO: This town is steeped in both history and culture and everywhere you turn, there are reminders to ponder and possibilities to explore. Chicago is pretty much known as a blue collar place and for the most part it is . But there is a unique feeling here. OC Michael Jordan I think the warmth within the people is really unbelievable, you would think that being in a big city like Chicago, that the people would be somewhat stuffy, it wouldn’t be as warm, nah to me it has a southern mentality of warmth with the people. 1 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS VO: Chicago has a reputation for being one of the world’s premier meeting destinations and rightfully so. Come September, there will be a different kind of meeting held here… one that is unlike any other in sports. E. OC MRolfing People often ask me, what is my favorite event in golf. The answer is easy… it’s the Ryder Cup. This is the famed Medinah Country Club, which in a few months will be home to one of the most anticipated Ryder Cups ever. F. VO: – Ryder Cup Chicago Think about it. In recent years Europe has totally dominated the Ryder Cup. One of Europe’s biggest stars actually lives in Chicago! But on home soil, the U.S. was victorious four years ago… and the American player like Hunter Mahan have a hot hand right now, Tiger is finally back in the winner’s circle and Bubba won the Masters. OC MRolfing This is the prefect storm, the final ingredient for my Chicago bucket list… the American’s trying to recapture the Ryder Cup at Medinah. VO: Since 1987 some twenty-five years ago, the United States has won the Ryder Cup outright just four times. (And at Medinah, it appears, that the American side will, once again not be the favorites. OC Michael Jordan I think it’s going to be one of the hardest Ryder Cup courses I’ve seen, since I have been going. And I think the energy there is going to be unbelievable because you know I think the Americans are going to be somewhat of the underdog. VO: For years now Michael Jordan has been a fixture at the Ryder Cup. And its clear, its something for which he has immense passion. OC Michael Jordan I think its the competition, you know the uh, purity of you know just playing, representing your country without the financial rewards of it, its just a competition and you know I get chill bumps every time I go to one of those things and I kind of feel the same way when I go to the Olympics. VO: For the Americans, the memories of a bitter defeat in 2010 are still fresh and clearly, they will be looking for redemptions at Medinah. 2 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS OC Dustin Johnson …I think it will be great. To play one here on your home turf, to play in Chicago, you know I think the turn out will be awesome. You know we’ll have the home field advantage and you know that’s always huge you know an event like that, that’s so emotional and there is so much that goes into it and you know, we want to win, you know really bad… G. OC MRolfing When we return we’ll take a look back at the thrilling 2010 Ryder Cup, and the small country that hosted it. Segment ONE 3 TRT: 5:28 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS SEGMENT TWO: A. OC / MRolfing Welcome back. This tiny train station is going to be really busy when the Ryder Cup rolls into town. These days trains always seem to remind me of Wales…it’s a place I can’t wait to get back to and it staged a Ryder Cup I’ll never forget. B. VO: Following a resounding victory in Kentucky in 2008, the United States team headed to Wales in 2010 with high hopes of retaining the Ryder Cup In a rare Monday finish, the two teams were greeted by a glorious day in Wales, which provided one of the most thrilling finishes Ryder Cup history. As the day progressed, the tide began to turn toward the U.S. and slowly it became clear the day’s final match would decide the Ryder Cup. I was following that incredible scene and have never sensed as much pressure on any two players as I did on Hunter Mahan and Graham McDowell that day. McDowell’s birdie at 16 was a s clutch as they come and when Mahan failed to par 17 the crowd erupted. The Ryder Cup would once again reside in Europe for two years. C. GFX Destination Diversion D. VO: Destination Diversion Wales is a place where the people are as proud as the landscape is panoramic. Wherever you go, history is waiting to greet you … the culture eager to embrace you and scores of splendid golf courses poised to test you. Wales is a country of many dimensions and for its size - features remarkable diversity. From Medieval castles to metropolitan centers and miles of unspoiled wilderness areas in between, this is a land of sudden contrasts. Wales is divided into three main regions… The North is a mixture of rocky mountains in the Snowdonia National Park, lush green countryside closer to the border of England …and vast areas of coastline that feature popular sandy beaches and historic hideaways. Mid-Wales is the country’s rural heartland and provides a soothing transition to the South of Wales where the majority of the nations residents live. VO: Wales Golf The golf in Wales is very underrated particularly the many links courses that dot the stunning Wales coastline. In the north, the strikingly beautiful Nefyn and District Golf Club is jaw-dropping. And not far away is a true hidden gem, Porthmadog. Harlech is home to the jewel of the north , magnificent Royal St. David’s. In mid-Wales Aberdovey is the quintessential links… it will mesmerize you. The majority of the best Wales layouts are in the South…like historic Tenby, intriguing Ashburnham … and the phenomenal links in the sky Pennard. Celtic Manor is also located in the south. But my favorite course in all of Wales, and one I believe rivals more famous ones in neighboring countries, is Royal Porthcawl. Someday, they should have a British Open here. 4 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS E. GFX Global Focus F. Global Focus – First Tee at the Ryder Cup OC: MRolfing In all of golf, there is no atmosphere like the first tee at the Ryder Cup. This is the first tee at Medinah..its pretty quiet right now, but come September it will be transformed into the loudest, most pressure packed and emotion filled arena you can imagine Annoucer SOT: We are live from Wales for one of the great scene in all of sports - the first tee just prior to the start of the 12 singles matches. OC DustinJohnson / Rolfing q&a: MRolfing: Is there any atmosphere in golf, like the first tee of the Ryder Cup? DJohnson: I’ve never seen one, not yet. I’ve never seen it and I don’t think anything else can compare. Yeah, I think that the hairs on my arms stood up when I walked out to the first tee. DJohnson: the fans over there, they were spectacular. You know they’re sitting there, singing songs just so loud. I mean, it might be the loudest place I have ever been, just standing on that first tee. You know, I have been to a lot of football games and there loud but you know they were, you know it was raining and it was nasty out but all the fans were there and they were cheering and yelling and singing songs. It was, it was pretty cool. VO: When we come back we’ll take a closer look at why Chicago is such a special place Segment TWO 5 TRT: 5:44 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS SEGMENT THREE: A. OC / MRolfing Welcome back…As a child I came to downtown Chicago only a few times a year. Back then it was nothing like this. Today the renaissance this area has undergone is phenomenal. And the great thing is, as spectacular as the present is. Chicago’s past is still preserved. B. VO: Chicago’s downtown area, otherwise known as the loop, is an architecture wonder. A tour along the river reveals structures of many different styles and eras. And the riverfront is only the beginning. From Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile to down-home neighborhoods, the buildings that form Chicago’s landscape provide splendid shelter for an incredible variety of rich cultural experiences beginning with cuisine. While hot dogs at Wrigley Field and deep-dish pizza still rank at the top of my list, Chicago’s cuisine scene is much more than that. This area lays claim to a large number of regional specialties, all of which reflect the cities ethnic and working class roots. The performing arts in the Windy City are truly celebrated “Chicago-style”. From renowned theatre companies to one of the best orchestras in the world and a calendar of phenomenal special events throughout the year, this city never stops when it comes to entertainment. Being the “Curious-George” that I am, many of Chicago’s famous landmarks have been scenes of great exploration for me over the years. While many are incredibly educational, there are also some that are just plain FUN. C. VO: But wait a minute let’s not forget about golf, there is plenty of it here. In fact, I believe Chicago has more good golf then any other metropolitan area in America and I’m not alone. OC: (ID: Teddy Greenstein, Sports Columnist, Chicago Tribune) Teddy Greenstein: Chicago is America’s best golf city because we joke that you can have an entire PGA tour out here. You can start with the great tree lined courses, you can go south and hit Olympia Field a U.S. Open quality course. You’ve got Chicago Golf Club which is our version of Augusta National. And then you’ve got the great Medinah. When you think about Medinah you think BIG time. 6 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS VO: Chicago’s tremendous golf infrastructure features numerous top notch layouts and facilities that come in all shapes, sizes and styles. OC: (ID: Robbie Gould, Placekicker, Chicago Bears) Robbie Gould: I don’t think you can find another city in the country where you can find as many great golf courses in such close proximity to one another, and they’re all top 100 courses. You can go 10 minutes from each course and you’ll find a top 100 somewhere that you’re going to be able to play. VO: Chicago has a very rich golf history having hosted a multitude of professional and amateur tournaments and two of the four major championships. OC: (ID: Mike Scully, Director of Golf, Medinah Country Club) Mike Scully: It’s loaded with great history, great golf courses going back to Chicago Opens, Western Opens, we’ve had U.S. Opens, PGA Championships and now the pinnacle of golf here with the Ryder Cup in 2012. VO: And one player who will surely be in Chicago in September is Bubba Watson. What a week he had at Augusta. Boy does he look good in that green jacket. Segment THREE 7 TRT: 3:39 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS SEGMENT FOUR… A. VO: The Sporting News has named Chicago the best sports city in America more than once. I name it that every chance I get. For me, Wrigley Field has always been one of my most treasured spots on earth…even though the Cubs have never won a World Series in my lifetime. Here it’s not as much about the titles as it is about the place and the people OC: Ernie Banks (ID: Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub) EBanks: There is a song that we play (singing) “Go Cubs Go… Go Cubs Go” they play that after we win and people sing it and they don’t want to leave here… I’d like for some day to be one of the Wonders of the World, that’s what I’m working on, one of the modern wonders of the world,. This park here, its an amazing place Rolfing: Will Wrigley Field ever change its so small in today’s world of big stadiums? Ernie Banks: People in baseball talk about it …the park is too small, the dugout is too small, the clubhouse is too small, the bathroom are too small. How did you all play at Wrigley Field? But its unique; it not like Fenway, Fenway is totally different than here, this is a very unique ball park. After spending 50 years here and coming in and out of this ballpark it seems like every day is a different day, …see the vines, see the lights, see the grass, see the game. I mean it’s a wonderful place to come, people just come here because it’s a wonderful place. (Pause) I’m glad you here. How do you feel here? Rofing: if somebody would’ve told me when I was a kid growing up watching you play, that some day on Monday morning, I’d be sitting in the stands with Ernie Bank’s I would‘ve started crying and run away. I’d ‘ve been scared to death. VO: Unlike the Cubs, other Chicago teams have won loads of championships including Michael Jordan’s six rings with the Bulls. But as a kid I always had a special affinity for the monsters of the midway… Da Bears. Today, their fans are just as rabid as always and they have one of the NFL’s best kickers…Robbie Gould. OC: (ID: Robbie Gould, Placekicker, Chicago Bears) Rolfing: Robbie pretend like this is a Sunday afternoon in the Fall and you’re coming out of this tunnel into the sunlight and seeing this environment. What is going through your mind at that point? 8 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS Robbie Gould: You know its pretty electric in here. You know if you look around, obviously these seats are filled, so when we come out of our tunnel , people are going nuts people are trying to grab you, screaming, yelling, banging on the side of the wall. You know its one of the best moments of anyone’s career, one to play in the NFL but to be such a part of a great sports town, with great sports fans. M.Rolfing: Are you nervous at that point? R.Gould: You know the only time I got nervous was my first couple of games of my rookie year. Then just like anything else, you’ve got to tell yourself, hey listen, I belong here. There is a reason I am here, there is a reason I am on the team. My coaches believe in me, the city believes in me. So when I go out there and do my job, I’ve got to make every kick. MRolfing: No matter how much I try to talk to you about football you always go back to golf. You’re probably the most avid golfer in the National Football League. What’s the biggest correlation between the two? RGould: The swings and the technique are the exact same. Obviously you’re on a plain you’ve got to get your foot on that axis in order to make sure that you’re getting to the ball. And hitting the sweet spot of the golf ball just like you’d hit the sweet spot of a football. Its funny cause I was not probably the most avid golfer when I got here 7 years ago in the city of Chicago but as I came here and started learning how similar both arts really are they’ve both been able to help me not only improve my kicking but also my golf game. C. GFX animation …Extra Effort D. VO –EXTRA EFFORT Robbie Gould at Soldier Field . MRolfing: Is there a particular ritual that you go through at a home game and you’re coming out , a certain amount of time before the kick off action. RGould: You know its funny I do have a routine. And usually my routine is I come thru the tunnel, sign a few autographs, go out to the far end zone, do my one step kicks and then I’ll do a couple of full length kicks with all my steps. And then I try to kick the upright as if I’m trying to putt with one of the putting tools with the straight line. To draw my line to make sure that you know if I’m on the left hash or right hash, that I’m making sure that everything is completely perfect. And the interesting part about Chicago is we have some pretty rough weather. So trying to judge the wind or get it low enough to try and keep it out of the snow. Those are things I try to go through to try and learn what my pregame routine is so that when I kick that 50 yarder, 35 yarder that at the end of the day I know exactly where to put it and where I’m going to aim. I usually pick out some crazy person in the back behind the upright, in random colors, unfortunately at green bay it’s a little tougher cause everyone camouflaged. So you’ve got to find that one person who sticks out. 9 4/30/12 2012 GLOBAL GOLF ADVENTURE Chicago Original air date: MAY 12, 2012 ~ 1:00 PM EST on NBC SPORTS E. VO: Europe has the Ryder Cup - America wants it. What a scene it will be in September… Golf’s most compelling event in one of America’s greatest sports towns. OC: Michael Jordan: I think it’s a great great sports town for all sports, not just basketball. For football, the Bears have been strong for years, you have the competition, the rivalry between the Cubs and the White Sox, and you know obviously the Bulls have made its impact, even the hockey team has been just as strong so I mean, the fans are so passionate there in Chicago and I think they’re truly going to enjoy the Ryder Cup. If they have never been, they are going to see an unbelievable event. And for me, it’s truly a highlight for me. F. MR OC: Thanks for being with us. As you can tell, I’m pretty revved up about the Ryder Cup coming to Chicago. It will truly be one of the most spectacular sporting events this town has ever seen. But even putting the Ryder Cup aside a Chicago visit should be on your bucket list. It’s my kind of town. See you next time.
