SESSION 3

THE FIRST STEP TO AUTHENTIC MANHOOD:

LOOKING BACK

Living Out Our Manhood

Does scripture support the idea of looking back, to see where we came from and that our past does form/affect us in both a positive and negative way?

Scripture that comes to mind:

Ps 51 – Search me O Lord and know my heart.

What is the end in mind?

Guide my steps

Unpack your past so that the light of Christ can heal these hurts.

I. A Brief Review

A. Broad but balanced view of Authentic Manhood, expressed in four faces:

1. The King –

2. The Warrior –

3. The Lover –

4. The Friend –

B. We desire to see in a man these virtues demonstrated and lived out.

II. Your Manhood Plan Worksheet

A. What is the end in mind? What is our plan?

B. How did your “ formative years ” form you?

1. All the events that brought you to this point – How did you get here?

2. There was a series of events and a series of personal decisions that brought you here. You learn how people got to be where there are from their past (7:50-8:00)

4. Hurtful moments

6. Leaving Home … How?

.”

IV. Observations Looking Back

A. My story is not ________________________. As a man, I am not _____________________.

Discovering that other men are like you is the benefit of meeting with other men (sharing your story and listening to other men’s story).

B. When a boy fails to ________________ with his dad, “ ”, of one kind or another, often fill the void.

When a d ad’s not there, it leaves a ______________ in a son’s psyche.

Some of the “demons”, i.e. cheap tragic substitutes, mentioned by the Speaker are:

W

M

Sexual A

A

Power G

D Personality

Or any other extreme, it is all seeking to compensate from something that should have been there but wasn’t.

And what often isn’t there, in a man’s life, is a reconciled, healthy relationship with the most significant person in his life growing up, and it’s his dad.

C. Many men have yet to reckon with their __________ or close out the ____________________ that still lives there.

Reasons the Speaker gives for men not being willing to reconcile their past:

• D , not wanting to lift the manhole cover.

Lack of C

Just plain I , on how the past affects now.

Some men just blame their p , and become helpless victims.

Some men are denying or excusing the E_____ they have done in their past.

There is unfinished business that needs to be dealt with in order to right the boat of manhood, to move on in a healthy way.

D. Until a man ___________________________ and deals with the ____________________ and

_________________________ that resides there, he can never be an authentic man.

“At some point every guy has to ‘ unpack his past ’, that is why the first step in Authentic

Manhood is looking back.”

Always living in the past, playing the victim is not manhood, it’s b______________,

E. You cannot become a real man without ____________. There is no such thing as

a “ ”.

- No man can become an authentic man without the help of other men. We need their:

• Insight

• Accountability

• Balance

- There are men who have “self-made s_____________”, but that success may have come at

the expense of a number of other things personally. They may be:

• Short-s_______

• Unh__________

• Imb______________

• Riddled with a number of B_________________

- But a healthy man has other men in their lives, to help make him who he needs to be.

F. For better or worse, we are all significantly shaped by the kind of ___________________ we experienced.

The past helps to explain you and me.

YES, we are P________________ of the past, but NO , we are not P___________ of the past.

How do we choose to be “Prisoners” of the past:

Ignoring

Denying

Surrendering to the past.

By telling our story to others, we can invite H_______ and A____________ to break free of those things from our past that are holding us back from the kind of manhood we need to achieve.
