King Duncan’s army has just about successfully defended Scotland. King Duncan finds out that during battle the Thane of Cawdor has betrayed him. King Duncan orders his execution and sends the messenger to find Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, to award him this additional title due to his brave service. Before Macbeth receives this message, he and his closest friend Banquo are confronted by three witches who give Macbeth a prophecy in the form of three titles: Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King of Scotland. Banquo is also given a prophecy regarding his moral disposition and his son, Fleance. Macbeth is confused by this information until a messenger arrives and awards him his new title Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth begins to become intrigued by this new title and the Witches’ Prophecy, but is warned by Banquo to keep his ambition in check.
