The Best Form of Government
In the early days of United States, federalism was created with idea of there being a
government that is heavily centralized in which the federal government is the most powerful and
grants political power. Also, the federal government in this system grants political power to state
and local government by allocating specific rights amongst them and protects their rights and
economical profits. Federalism was a framework on the order system of power for government
of the United States, which has evolved as a nation because of it. It still uses the federal system.
Federalism has specific benefits in local representation and legislation, while its two
disadvantages are in the areas of the economy and large bureaucracy leading to slow decision
making processes. However, if one examines federalism’s specific advantages and
disadvantages, one will see that the benefits outweigh cost in being the best choice of
government
One of the benefits of Federalism is the recognition that the federal government gives to
local government, allowing their influence on what goes on around their region through local
representation. Local representation allows local government to present various important issues
of citizens from the individual states in front of the federal legislative. In addition, it allows local
governments to create and enforce their own legislation while giving input of localized decision
making from the federal government making sure that the right laws are passed. In aspect of
creating legislation from local government, this allows different legislations to be tested to see
which one are ineffective and effective in creating a better system on the state level for its
citizens. Alternately, other large forms of government like Communism and Monarchy are
different from Federalism in term of decision making without considering the concern of the
state and local government. Thus local representation and legislation are the key attribute from
Federalism if one wants more control on local government then federal government when it’s
come to local policy that benefits the state.
When one comes to disadvantages of Federalism, there are a few, but the main point is
economic situation and decision making. The national economic situation is managed by the
Federal government in Federalism, but every state different economic situation. As a result, the
federal government cannot adequately make economically decisions that will benefit each state.
The second major disadvantage of Federalism is the decision making process of the large
bureaucracy. The increased level of government that Federalism creates means that many people
are involved in the decision making process, which can led to corruption. In addition, the large
amount people in the decision making process can hamper the response time of a crisis. The
effect of the slow response time means that it would take longer to alert the right authority to
action swiftly.
There are advantages and disadvantages to Federalism that a person can look to know
how to judge it. Knowing that a great country like the United States government system stems
from the Federalism still having present in America democracy until this day shows one how
strong Federalism is. Lastly, by reviewing the main benefits to the local levels and few negatives
at the national level, one can see that the best choice for established and stable democracy is a
form of Federalism
