Symbolism in A Raisin in the Sun

Term 3: Interdisciplinary Project (Legacy)

Symbols represents something beyond themselves, making direct and meaningful connections between a specific object, scene, character, or action and abstract ideas, values, persons, or ways of life. Many symbols have left a lasting legacy, as we continue to associate specific meaning to certain symbols (i.e. The American flag has become symbolic for freedom, opportunity, etc.).

For this project, you are going to demonstrate your knowledge of the characters in A Raisin in the

Sun as well as your understanding of symbolism by creating a PowerPoint that includes images from

the web that symbolize several characters from the novel. Please choose images based on what you know about each character’s personality. These choices should reflect the thoughtful character analysis that we have completed in class, and should not be images that show a character’s likes or dislikes.

Lastly, you will identify an image that can serve as a symbol for YOU. This image will represent your personality and the meaning you assign will forge a lasting legacy on this image you select, so choose wisely!

Due Date: End of Class on Tuesday, March 27th.
