2.A Research Paper:
SUBJECTS: (choose one)
a.
An in-depth study of one particular artist or art work (painting, sculpture, architecture, etc.)
created within the time period covered by this course. OR:
b.
A comparison of two different art works from the period covered by this course, preferably
from two different style periods. For example, you might compare and contrast a painting by
Delacroix with a painting by Matisse. You might choose two paintings of the same or
similar subject, by two different artists, and describe how differently two artists depict the
same scene. Or, you might choose two works by the same artist: an early work and a late
work, for instance, and describe how that artist's style changed in his lifetime and why. OR:
c.
A study of the relationships between the visual arts and other aspects of culture such as music,
philosophy, religion, economics, etc. In this type of paper you might compare a style period
in the visual arts, say Impressionism, and describe how it connects with the music of that
time or the philosophy of that time.
The three ideas presented above are only possibilities. If you come up with an idea of your own for a
paper, tell me about it and I'll let you know if it's a workable one. First and foremost, choose works of
art that interest you -- something that catches your eye and has aroused your curiosity.
All papers must have in the following order:
1. A title page with the title of your essay and your name, etc.
2. The main body of your paper (a minimum of 6 double-spaced pages of text) that
begins with an introductory paragraph with a clearly stated thesis.
All pages must be numbered. Titles of works of art must be in italics or underlined and the
date also given with the first mention of the work and the corresponding Figure number (see
#3 below). You must have in-text citations of your sources of information – remember to
cite all sources of information that are not your own opinions or ideas not just direct quotes.
There should be no reproductions in your written section.
3. Page(s) for reproductions – you must have reproductions for each work discussed listed as
Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. Include title, date, culture/country, medium, and current location of
the work. (can be black & white copies)
4. A Works-Cited page (see the MLA handout) or Bibliography. Include a minimum of 3
sources other than your textbook. Encyclopedic sources are unacceptable. At least 2 of
your sources must be published texts. Web site sources must have the name of an
author and be from a reputable site such as from a college or museum.
All papers must be typed, double-spaced with a 12 point font (Times Roman or Arial), 1-1.25" margins,
single-sided, and stapled in the upper left hand corner – no folders.

2.B Art Projects: will focus on a specific subject pertinent to our covered time period and must include
first a typed, double-spaced proposal due by Thursday, July 14th. The finished project will also
include a typed, double-spaced, one page explanation of the concept, process and outcome of the
project.
Projects can be explorations of media, techniques, or a specific style from our covered time period – the
modern era.
Project Ideas:
1. Take 2 famous works from a time period before our covered period and update them into a style
we are covering in this class (example: what would a Cubist Mona Lisa look like?).
2. Design a room around a famous work of art from the modern era – for instance: what should a
living room look like that was designed around Salvador Dali’s Persistence of Memory (the
melting watches one)?
3. Interview a contemporary building in the Seattle area – must use the handout on this project.
Have fun with this project but don’t forget quality – I’ll be grading you with the idea that this is
replacing a 7-10 page research paper.
Art Review Papers and Art Projects are due Thursday, August 4th
Projects will be presented to the class by the students and carried to my office after class.

3. Field trip assignments and class participation assignments will count for the remaining 10% based

CLASS PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE
Participation and attendance to all classes is strongly urged. Exams will require information based on
slide lectures and classroom discussions. Attendance is required and will be factored into your grade
at the end of the quarter (absences over 3 days will lower your quarter grade 0.3 for each day up to
6). Six or more absences will result in an automatic failure of the course. Three arrive late or leave
early incidents will count as one full absence. Students that are chronically late/leave early will be
asked to drop the course.
