American Economic Association, 2012. 248-55. Jstor. Web. 18 Apr. 2013.
The American Review book that I've read includes reasons why people seek the streets rather
than getting medical attention. Mentally ill people fear people that want to help them because
they don't know any better.
The source offers valid information because its from a database named Jstor. The goal of this
source is to provide information about the mentally ill.

Smith, Joshua E. "Number of Homeless in Merced Questioned." - Local. Merced Sunstar, 26 Jan.
2012. Web. 15 Mar. 2013.
Local officials said they wanted to "double check" the area numbers, and have scheduled a
recount for Monday. Central Merced is generally considered the region encompassed by Bear
Creek, G, R and 13th streets. Last year's official number of homeless people in central Merced
was 52, according to association data. The homeless count is required for local homeless
programs to qualify for HUD funding. Homeless service providers have received more than $2.5
million in funding since 2004, according to the association officials.
This is a newspaper article that gives the insight that authority figures in Merced County are
neglecting their civil duties to protect those in need. Homeless counts that should be done on a
regular basis are being abandoned and are not treated in a serious manner because mistakes have
been conducted questioning the validity and reliability of public officials and their interests of
improving the county.
This source is helpful to my research because it shows how unemployments rates in Merced
County have increased in a variety of cities. Due to these high rates of unemployment, families
are forced to seek welfare, but what can they do when welfare and disability payments get cut.
Families under these circumstances aren’t able to seek shelters because there isn’t many in the
Merced County.
"What Is the Official Definition of Homelessness?" National Health Care for the Homeless
Council. N.p., n.d. Web. 15 Mar. 2013.
What defines a homeless individual is a person “who lacks housing, that provides temporary
living accommodations” stated by The National Health Care for the Homeless Council. The
people who fall under this category may be people with mental illnesses, veterans, women,
families and victims of domestic violence.
This is a useful source because it states that Merced is not supplying enough out reach programs
such as homeless shelters and in some cases depriving women from any aid. Homeless
individuals are not receiving sufficient funds and attention from the County.
The information provided will enhance my essay by providing the necessary evidence to support
my claim. It is essential to define what is a homeless person exactly.
