The Club: MRUFC had it's official beginnings on January 26th, 1965 at 8pm. This was the time and date of the Inaugural Meeting for the Moorabbin RUFC, held at the Moorabbin town hall. The nucleus of players for the new club came from the Marlins, the St Kilda and Kiwis rugby clubs. The current jersey is actually the former jersey of the Marlins. Since this time, the club has experienced impressive growth both on and off the field to the point where it has the largest player base in the Victorian Rugby Union. In its 45 year history the 'Mighty Rams' have become the most successful club in the VRU competition having won fifteen 1st Grade Premierships. The club fields teams in all senior and junior grades and is renowned for the incredible junior talent that continually evolves from the club. The MRUFC consistently provides the vast majority of players to the VRU junior representative sides and some of these players have gone on to play representative schoolboys rugby for Australia. Many of the great names of Victorian rugby were proud members of the Rams, this success from these great teams has been mirrored in recent times by current teams. It is one of only two clubs in the VRU competition that can boast its own dedicated rugby grounds and, with recent refurbishment to both the playing surfaces (including the addition of a 3rd pitch) and significant building renovations the club is able to boast a first class facility. The Melbourne Rugby Club of that time won the first year of the five-team competition for the new trophy the Dewar Shield (donated by the Scotch Whisky Distillery John Dewar and Sons). One hundred years later teams still compete for the same Dewar Shield. The Premier competition is comprised of eight clubs with each club fielding three teams (Premier 1, Premier 2, and Premier 3). Other senior competitions offered are Metro 2nd Division with an A & B Grade, Colts (U20), Country, Women and Masters (over 30s). During this time, a number of clubs have dominated the 1st Grade results. Moorabbin Boroondara (formerly Kiwis & Kiwi Hawthorn) and Melbourne Rugby Clubs share the most number of Premierships with 15 apiece. Moorabbin holds the record for consecutive Premierships, winning six in a row from 1981-1986. Other prominent clubs during this 100 year period include Melbourne University, Power House and Navy. Team entries have increased from 144 teams in 2009 to 156 teams in 2010. The Junior Club team entries have increased significantly in recent years offering 6 age groups in two year windows from Under 8s to Under 18s, with an A & B grade level in most of the age groups. Junior Player Pathway games for Under 8s through to Under 10s (Walla and Mini Rugby) which are played at a common ground location in two zones are also well established and enjoyed by many.
