WORKING FOR THE MAN PART II
Sins of the past
The Forward team.
Prologue
Jahri, Pat, Doc Pepper, Kelly Sioux.
Or should that be Jeyna Trayos, James, Miguel 'Doc' Sanchez and Mac Mcgillis.
The journey from Advoss, a small exo-habitat in Deep Six, was pretty uneventful. It
took a little more convincing, and a fair amount of hard cash, to find traders willing to
head out to Perdita.
You got a lot of looks, the kind that said the onlooker figured you were either crazy or
stupid. A few promptly refused to even talk to you, making their contempt for the
scum you clearly were clear. After all, only scum go to Perdita...
Eventually, though, you got a transport out., a rust bucket class 2.5 , the @lanta.
Captain Hodges didn't seem to care much who you were, nor why you wanted to go.
He and his crew had trade out that way, your coin was good, and that was that. You
wound up stowed in cramped living quarters for a coupe of days as the slow jump was
made, the ship taking a couple of detours to pick up further 'cargo' en-route. The old
ship rattled and moaned constantly, the bulk-heads filmed with grease and the lighting
dim and flickering.
Your arrival on Perdita was loud, obnoxious and smelled even worse than the @lanta.
A bustle of people, crowded into the main docking ring. The bulk-head lights had
been stripped form a dozen different sources, and not one bulb seemed to work
properly. The deck-plating clattered and rattled, un-even and badly maintained. Pipes
and conduits running along the walls dripped unidentified moisture, and the hiss of
pressurised gas punctuated the din of shouted conversations.
The crush of people snaked along the concourse, a press of hookers plying their trade,
people trying desperately to sell you ammunition, begging you to take stuff aboard for
them, arguments and clanking cargo drones. A very bored group of Mercs around a
scan-gate slowly moved people through. Armoured and heavily armed with shotguns
and plasma casters, weapons suggesting that not only weren't they interested in taking
prisoners, they weren't bothered about collateral damage.
Mercifully, the gates didn't go crazy when you stepped through. Jenya had to restrain
herself from slapping away an errant hand looking for 'concealed' weapons, a situation
that also happened to James within the crush of people going through security. . A
dark haired girl with a generous cleavage and minimal clothing slid up to Jenya
almost as soon as you made it through, recommending that, if you were looking for
work, Mama Abstraction paid well for her kind...
Ignoring the distractions, you followed the sound of raucous music and found
yourselves in the Floating Vagabond. The guy behind the bar looked like an ex merc,

and wore a heavy pistol on his hip. Dozens of pirates, Mercs and other types were
drinking and shouting, working girls draped across shoulders, sat giggling in laps.
There was a pool of blood just inside the doorway. Through an access hatch in the
wall, the shattered body of an unfortunate was being dragged by two black clad and
rancid smelling figures. One turned it's pale, nose less face towards you, and hissed
from under it's hood. The Ghul dragged their prize into the tunnel, the hatch clanged
shut.
The Barman looked up - just placing a help wanted sign that had seen better days onto
the sticky bartop.
"if any of you are looking for security work, you're in luck. My last bouncer had
an argument with some of krenshaws crew, and won himself a ticket to the
understation. The names Tom-Tom. I pay cash , room and board inclusive.
Welcome to the Vagabond."...
You've been working here a week now. Janya behind the bar and waiting tables,
James in the Vagabonds kitchens and as backup security. Miguel stays behind the bar
or deals for the poker tables. Mac McGillis just stands around and looks mean. You
occasionally see Jos moving around the station, but most of the Ghul seem to stay
away from the brightly lit areas. Given the way the pirates and Mercs treat the junkers
and the rest of the engineers, you can't really blame them.
All of you work in or around the Vagabond - although one of the MDK mercs
suggested that his boss might be hiring in a few days , if any of you knew how to
handle a gun. Well, he made that suggestion to James and Mac. The suggestion he
made to Jenya was a little different...
Fights seem to break out here with alarming regularity, and Double T (tomtom) and
Mac are only really expected to step in if people start pulling weapons...
Working girls, and guys are also a constant feature, all of them, as far as you can tell,
work for a Fayal madam called Abstraction. Well, all but one.
There's a Davinar 'courtesan' who works nearby - offering massages, although she
clearly offers other services as well. named Serfina - apparently she used to be a
companion, but now she's the property of a local Slaver, guy by the name of Quintus
Payne. She doesn't look happy about it, to be honest. Actually, she seems to look
pretty jittery around the clientele generally. The local whores all seem to go out their
way to ignore her. oddly, there's also a Fayal, girl by the name of Luna, who's offering
medical services. She seems to be a new comer, because most of the locals seem to
assume 'medical services' means dressing as a nurse and earning your keep on your
back. An assumption most seem to have made about Jenya as well.
The main guy around here is Harlock Krenshaw. At least 4 of the pirate Crews seem
to serve under him, calling themselves the 'irregulars' and the rest either pay attention
to him or get butchered. His sister, 'Slade' , seems to be his enforcer. You've already
seen her kill one guy with her bare hands.
You've identified Mathers - he's at the bar a lot, always in the company of a man
called Renton Novik., although they really don't seem to get on.
A few enquiries about weapons reveals the name Trixe maybell - apparently she's the
main arms dealer on station, although you've not seen her yet. Unless you're looking
for Ships and ship armament - that can be taken care of by a guy called Artim Dayley,
apparently he can get second hand ships to order....

there's a fair number of slaves, and the snakehead market has already had one auction
since you've been here, selling off a bunch of terrified and undernourished colonists to
various interested parties, including mama Abstraction. There was one, a woman who
wasn't up on the block but who'd obviously been picked up not that long ago. nobility
of some sort, sat around in chains and an expensive and now ruined evening gown.
She wasn't up for sale, but you could see the fear in her eyes, waiting for her time...
The mercs all seem to be from an outfit called MDK Security. They have a
commander, named Jensen, but he seems to have been kept busy sweeping up trouble
with the Junkers. there are other merc crews kicking around, but they don't have
anything to do with the station.
You haven't seen much of the Junkers, or the Ghul. The ravan don't seem to be hugely
welcome in the pirate areas.
You've also heard a few rumours that some of the Merc's have been murdered in the
darker parts of the station. Brutally murdered. No-one is sure whose responsible, but
Krenshaw seems determined to find out, and doesn't seem to care who he has killed to
get there.
There is DEFNITELY a Drazak on board. It's called Prospero, and apparently works
as an information broker. You've not seen it yet, but it does have a representative that
seems to drift around the station talking to everyone, a woman by the name of
Caliban.
Security on the station appears to be pretty haphazard, but lethal. The mercs are
definitely operating on a shoot first, maybe ask someone else questions at a later, in
determined point. There are cameras, but you have no idea where the security stations
are, and the MDK don't seem in the mood to talk. Scan gates and guards are at most
of the big airlocks, and it's clear nothing gets in without going through checks first. it's
the kind of place you can get lost in, but that might not be a good thing...
So you wait, watching the scum enjoying themselves. The slaves wailing , the doxies
plying their trade, the silent arrival of the Ghul to remove bodies after a fight...
until the tannoy announces, scant few days later, the arrival of another couple of
ships.
The timing is right, and, as the press of people rush towards the arrival's airlock to
welcome the newcomers with the same open arms that you received, you ready
yourself for the real work to begin....
