Abstract
Introduction: The abstract for an original research paper should be no more
that 300 words long and should be divided into sections, as below. For case
reports, the abstract should consist of one short paragraph with no
subsections.
Methods: Avoid abbreviations in the abstract, except for very well-known
ones, such as ECG.
Results: Summarise the main findings of the study.
Conclusions: An abstract is only required for original research papers and
case reports. Review articles and editorials do not need an abstract. If in
doubt, consult the HJC editorial staff.
2
The introduction should describe the purpose of the study and its
relation to previous work in the field; it should not include extensive review of
the literature.1
Methods
These should be concise, but sufficiently detailed to permit repetition by
other investigators.
Study population
Patients
Use subheadings as necessary to facilitate the reader’s understanding.
Controls
It should rarely be necessary to use more than three levels of heading.
Statistical analysis
Procedures used for statistical analysis should be described in a
subsection.
Results
Present positive and relevant negative findings of the study, supported
when necessary by reference to tables and figures. Data included in tables
should not be repeated in the text unless they warrant particular emphasis.
Discussion
Interpret the results of the study, with emphasis on their relation to the
original hypothesis and to previous studies.
