5th International Colloquium Marx & Engels

The Centro de Estudos Marxistas (Cemarx), of the Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas (
Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences – IFCH) of the Unicamp, has started the call for
papers for the 5th INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIM MARX & ENGELS. Papers could be submitted
between February 28 and May 31, 2007 .
General Information
The 5th International Colloquium Marx & Engels receives, essentially, two types of
communications: those which take the Marxist theory as their subject of research, be it to analyze
this theory, criticize it or develop it, and the communications which utilize the Marxist theoretical
framework in empirical or theoretical researches which fit into the event's Thematic Groups .
Researchers interested in submitting their papers should indicate to which Thematic
Group they fit in. Occasionally, the Organizing Commission of the 5th International Colloquium
Marx & Engels could redistribute the propositions from one group to another.
The Thematic Groups of the 5th Colloquium are the following:
TG 1 – Marx's theoretical work and Marxism
Critical examination of the work of Marx and Engels and the classical works of Marxism in
the 19th and 20th centuries. The polemics stimulated by Marx's theoretical work. The tendencies of
Marxist thought and their transformations. The theoretical work of Brazilian and Latin American
Marxists. The issue of renovation of Marxism.
TG 2 - Marxism and Human Sciences
Examination of the presence of Marxism in Economics, Sociology, Political Science,
Anthropology, History, in the International Relations area and Law. Examination of the Marxist
critique of human sciences and the contributions of human sciences for the development of
Marxism. Marxist theoretical polemics and conceptual developments in these areas of
knowledge. The presence of Marxism in the Brazilian and Latin American universities.
TG 3 – Economy and politics in contemporary capitalism
The Marxist approach of the economical, political and social transformations of capitalism
at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. New accumulation patterns of
capital, new imperialist phase, transformations of the State and capitalist democracy. The
situation of the dominant and dependent countries. Brazil and Latin America .
TG 4 – Class relations in contemporary capitalism
The Marxist approach of the transformations occurred within the organization of work
under capitalism and in the structure of classes. Laborers, working class, "new working class"
and "middle class". The petite bourgeoisie. The peasants in current capitalism. The current
debate on the decline of class polarization in the end of the 20 th century and the beginning of the
21st century. The working classes and the popular movements. The new configuration of the
bourgeoisie. The social classes in Brazil and Latin America . The Marxist concept of social class
and class struggle in contemporary capitalism.
TG 5 - Education, capitalism and socialism
The relationships between the educational system and capitalism according to the
Marxist perspective: training of labor power; education and social classes; ideology and
educational process; educational policy. The Marxist analysis of education in Brazil and Latin
America . The cultural apparatuses of capitalism (universities, research centers). The cultural
centers created by the socialist movement. Analysis of the innovator educational experiences
accomplished in the societies originated in the revolutions of the 20 th century. Marxist theory and
education.
TG 6 - Culture, capitalism and socialism
Capitalism and cultural production: the new tendencies; plastic arts, literature and cultural
industry. Marxist analysis of culture in Brazil and Latin America. Culture and socialism: the
cultural movements in the societies which originated in the revolutions of the 20 th century.
Marxism and cultural production.
TG 7 - Socialism in the 21st century
Marxist analysis of the revolutions of the 20th century. The communist and socialist
heritage of the 19th and 20th centuries and the socialism of the 21st century. Marxism and
socialism. The issue of renovation of socialism. The theory of transition to socialism. Laborers
and socialist transition. Strong points and obstacles for the reconstruction of the socialist
movement in the 21 st century.
Submission of papers
Papers could be submitted from February 28 up to May 31, 2007 . Researchers should
fill in the submission form at Cemarx's website (www.unicamp.br/cemarx). Besides, they should
send to Cemarx two printed copies of their papers, together with a copy of their submission form.
Attention! The authors should indicate in the external side of the envelope and in a clearly visible
way:
a) The Thematic Group (TG) to which they are sending their papers;
b) their full mail addresses and their emails.
Modalities of submission for the presentation of papers
1. Communications
The text of the communication should have between fifteen and twenty-four thousand
characters (including spaces and notes), totaling at most ten pages in times new roman 12 .
The proposals of papers which overcome this limit will not be considered. In the text should be
included the paper's title, the author's name and condition (professor, post-graduate student,
independent researcher). The text of the paper should clearly define the subject which will be
examined, present its theses and arguments and make explicit the debate (theoretical,
historiographic or political) within which the paper is inserted. Important! Papers should follow the
citation rules displayed at Cemarx's website.
2. Posters
The 5th International Colloquium Marx & Engels is open for the participation of undergraduated
students, who could present papers of scientific initiation or graduation, whose subjects fit in one
of the Thematic Groups of the colloquium.
The abstract of the paper should have between three to five thousand characters
(including spaces and notes) in times new roman 12 . In the text should be included the paper's
title, the authorr's name and the graduation course to which he/she us enrolled. The text should
present the research's subject and its main ideas and information. The instruction to make a
poster will be published at Cemarx's website.
Divulging of results
The submission of papers closes on May 31, 2007 . The papers accepted will be
divulged at Cemarx's website, according to the following schedule:
a) 30 of June: communications;
b) 15 of July: posters.
The results will be divulged four months before the beginning of the event as to allow all
participants to ask for grants from the financial bodies and universities, as Cemarx can not
finance the participants of the event .
General Program
The 5th Colloquium will have morning lectures – as a general and ordinary program –
proffered by lecturers invited by the event's Organizing Commission. During the afternoon, there
will be the meetings of the Thematic Groups, and at the evening there will be the presentation of
beginner researchers. The nights will be free and there will be cultural and fraternization activities.
