Literature and Composition 2014-2015 Lionheart Christian Academy Telitha Castleberry, Instructor I. Literature and Composition II. Course Description In this course, students will study literature in its historic, literary, and artistic contexts to develop critical thinking and writing skills. II. Textbook and Supplemental Materials Tuition Requirements: Students will need to purchase the following books for the year in paperback or as e-books: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Edgar Allan Poe Selections: ( May be found all in one book) The Raven , The Tell Tale Heart ,The Pit and the Pendulum , and The Murders in the Rue Morgue . The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Pygmalion- George Bernard Shaw Edmodo Account Registration All Books studied are listed on the ACT/SAT Prep List. In addition, selected Poetry will be provided. Additional Poetry to be selected from: Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Longfellow, and Lincoln III. Course Objectives Introduce students to classic literature. Develop student knowledge of famous authors and their works of literature through research, discussion, and writing assessments. Provide students with tools to strengthen their writing skills. Develop an understanding of MLA formatting. Teach students to read with discernment. Train independent, self-motivated learners. Prepare students for college classes by expecting carefully researched, well considered material to be presented in standard format. Develop student vocabulary and awareness of literary terms. Prepare for taking the ACT/SAT. Develop an appreciation for poetry and an understanding of its forms. IV. Assessment of Student Achievement 1 All tests will be graded on a scale of 0-100 (90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, 59 and below F). Students are expected to complete the course reading before each class as well as any material posted on the website. Students are strongly encouraged to attend all class meetings. Bonus points may be given and added to a student’s test grade when necessary. Make up procedures are at the discretion of the instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor in a timely manner to re-schedule missed exams and other graded activities. Students will be tested on weekly assignments and V. Attendance Class attendance is critical for ensuring academic success; therefore, students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Attendance will be recorded from the first 2 day of the student’s official enrollment. Each student should be punctual. It is considered rude and an interruption to the class for students to arrive late. It is recognized that from time to time, extenuating circumstances may prevent a student from being able to attend a class. If the student misses a test or in-class assignment because of such an absence, make-up assignments may be given at the instructor’s discretion. However, there is no requirement that the instructor provide the opportunity for the make-up of work missed. If the student was scheduled to make a presentation to the class, the opportunity to make the presentation at a later date or to the instructor outside the scheduled class time is at the instructor’s discretion. There is no requirement that the instructor provide a make-up opportunity for students who miss their scheduled presentation dates. In all cases of absence, the student is responsible for acquiring assignment information and making up incomplete work resulting from such an absence. If you miss a class, you are responsible for turning in class work at your next class attendance.In addition, students will be responsible for material in the class they are returning. For example, if you miss you will be responsible for assignment from the missed week plus the assignments for the current class. Any student that misses more than 50% of the class will only receive credit for the class at the instructors discretion ( LCA policy). VII. Academic Dishonesty Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Plagiarism can be defined as unintentionally or deliberately using another person’s writing or ideas as though they are one’s own. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, copying another individual’s work and taking credit for it, paraphrasing information from a source without proper documentation, mixing one’s own words with those of another author without attribution, and buying or downloading a paper from the Internet.Any student involved in an incident such as, but not limited to, unsatisfactory clinical performance; a proven form of academic dishonesty, for example blatant plagiarism; etc. will receive the grade of “F” in the course where the incident occurred. *X.
