Dear Patrons:
As we continue our service into a new year, the Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. will
celebrate its 23nd Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observance. We will be sponsoring a Youth Program, College Fair,
and Scholarship Luncheon to commemorate the outstanding contributions of this great American. Our theme this
year is "Bridging the Generation Gap: Transcending the Dream". We need your continued support as we salute
high school students who have excelled in the areas of Art, Music, Leadership, Academics, and Athletics with
a Martin Luther King Achievement Award.
Our MLK Commemorative Banquet will take place on January 21, 2002 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Greenville,
South Carolina. The proceeds from this banquet will support deserving high school seniors as they continue
their educational goals. We will also recognize a person for his/her outstanding contributions to our community
with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award. And this year, we are expanding on the foundation of
this event by increasing scholarships given and broadening our advertising to include television and radio.
We are also highlighting the National Campaign to build a memorial for Dr. King in Washington, DC, and have
included information about that effort.
The Youth Program and College Fair will be held at Southside High School on January 19, 2002 from 9:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. The College Fair will include colleges such as Furman University, University of South CarolinaSpartanburg, South Carolina State University, Clemson University, Greenville Tech University, and many others.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is a service fraternity established in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University.
Gamma Gamma Lambda Chapter is a local graduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha chartered on August 24, 1941 and
serves the community through youth mentoring programs, voter registration drives, and by participating in the
March of Dimes' WalkAmerica Fundraiser. We also sponsor "Project Alpha", which informs young teenage boys
about pregnancy, and more importantly, their role and responsibilities in manhood. The Youth Program, College
Fair, and Scholarship Banquet are our part of the National program to encourage young men and women to stay in
school and attend college.
We want to thank you for the support you have given us in the past and would like to encourage you to become a

the pages following. Enclosed with the sponsorships, also, are opportunities to place your company’s ad in our 2002

Project Summary
BACKGROUND

On June 22, 1998, the US House of Representatives passed Join Resolution
113 authorizing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to establish a foundation to
manage the fundraising and design of a memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. in Washington, DC. The Senate followed, passing Join Resolution 41 on
June 25, 1998.

On July 16, 1998, President Bill Clinton signed a Joint Congressional
Resolution authorizing a memorial for Dr. King to be built on the National
Mall in Washington, DC.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation is a 501c3
organization.

The Foundation has until November 12, 2003, to complete a design, raise the
money for the memorial and break ground.

On December 2, 1999, the Foundation received the final go-ahead when the
National Capital Planning Commission approved a site on the Mall for the
memorial adjacent to the Tidal Basin.

The National Mall site for Dr. King's memorial had to be approved by the
National Capital Memorial Commission, the Commission of Fine Arts, and
finally, the National Capital Planning Commission.

The King memorial site is a four-acre plot situated across the Tidal Basin
from the Jefferson Memorial and north of the memorial to President Franklin
D. Roosevelt, in line of site between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial will be the first site on the
Mall to commemorate a single African-American, as well as only the second
one dedicated to an individual who did not serve as a US president.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial will be last memorial ever
built on the Mall, as we know it today.

THE MEMORIAL DESIGN
The Foundation formed a panel of international architects and
designers in March 1998 to coordinate the architectural and design
process. The design competition attracted more than 1,900
registrants from 52 countries representing North and South
America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The competition has received
more than 900 design submissions from architects, landscape
architects, students, sculptors, and professors representing more
than 34 countries.
On September 13, 2000 The ROMA group, an interdisciplinary
organization of architects, landscape architects, and planners
located in San Francisco, submitted the winning design.
THE FOUNDATION
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. established the Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr.
national Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. in 1998, after Congress authorized the
Fraternity to establish a foundation to manage the fundraising and design of a memorial
to Dr. King. Dr. King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Dr. King's widow, Coretta Scott King, serves as honorary chairwoman of the project and
former Atlanta Major and US Ambassador Andrew Young serves as co-chairman. John
Carter, a retired BellSouth executive, is the project manager.

Chapter Fundraising and Awards Summary
Theme: “Bridging the Generation Gap, Transcending the Dream”
LUKE H. CHATMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Luke H. Chatman Scholarship has been awarded to at least two local high school students
over the last twenty-three years and was named after a former Chapter President and the first
District (State) Director for South Carolina.
The scholarship has given to two students each year. Last year, Chapter was able to offer three
$1,000.00 awards. Over $45,000 dollars has been to needy student during the life of this
scholarship. Part of the funds raised from this event goes to these Scholarships. Applications for
this year’s scholarships will be distributed in early November and recipients will be announced in
April 2002.
The 2001 scholarship recipients were as follows:

MLK YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
These awards are given to local High School students for Outstanding Achievement in five
categories: Art, Athletics, Music, Scholarship, and Leadership. They are presented at the MLK
Youth Program and College Fair Youth Program.
The awards are based on the recommendations of high school teachers and administrators through
their Guidance Offices. During the 2001 MLK Youth Program, more than 75 awards were given
to recipients representing 11 area high schools. This year’s event will be held on Saturday,
January 19, 2002 at Greenville High School.
DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CITIZENSHIP AWARD
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Citizenship Award is given to a deserving Greenville area
citizen who has exhibited outstanding community service to the Greenville community.
This award is based on the principles that Dr. King stood for during his life. Some of the

MLK Event History
Theme: “Bridging the Generation Gap, Transcending the Dream”
The Gamma Gamma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been hosting the
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration for the last 20 years. This event is the only one given in
remembrance and observance of Dr. Martin Luther King in the Greenville area. The event has
historically helped raise monies for scholarships given to graduating high school students who
plan to attend college. Over the past 20 years, the event has helped raise over $45,000 in
scholarship funds.
The celebration is hosted in two segments: a youth day program and an observance banquet. The
youth program involves bringing together the area’s youth to participate in activities that will
help them learn and develop strong morals such as teamwork, perseverance, fair play, and good
judgement, as well as allow them to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the impact he
had on society. These activities are competitive but educational and fun. The youth program
concludes with an awards banquet and presentation.
The observance banquet is an evening program set to honor Dr. King and allow everyone to
reflect on how society has evolved since the Civil Rights Movement. The banquet features a
speaker, songs, and an award given to a Greenville citizen for outstanding community service.
Sponsors and supporters are recognized by having their company’s ads published in the program
booklet for the banquet.
This year, the Gamma Gamma Lambda chapter is looking to expand on the celebration by
increasing the amount of scholarships given, by expanding on advertising to include television,
radio, and a city billboard. Also there will be a guest reception before the banquet for this year’s
featured speaker. Proceeds from this year’s event will also be donated to the MLK National
Memorial Project Foundation to help build the MLK Memorial in Washington D.C. The youth
program is expanding by providing an essay and poster contest. The essay contest winner will
read their essay at the evening banquet, and the winning poster contest entry will be showcased
on the cover of the program booklet.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2002 celebration is scheduled for January 21, 2002 with the
youth celebration on January 19, 2002.
