Personal Narrative Essay—“My Theme for English”
American Literature, Unit 1
Mrs. Bennett, Fall 2009
DIRECTIONS: Write a reflective essay introducing yourself. Be thoughtful
exude style, but don’t tell me every detail of your life. Keep your paper interesting
and class appropriate! Think about our reading and discussion of Langston Hughes’
poem “Theme for English B.” See my personal essay as an example.
1. Write a ONE PAGE, SINGLE-SPACED
2. Use MULTIPLE PARAGRAPHS!
3. Use proper spelling and grammar. Get a friend, parent, sibling, etc. to proof
read your paper. Reading your own paper aloud also helps you catch
mistakes. Trust me—try it.
4. Look at the rubric to see how you will be graded. This is my first
assessment of your writing, so do the best you can.
5. Your paper MUST be typed!
6. Submit a copy to www.turnitin.com. PRINT the submission receipt to turn in
to me. Class ID’s: 4th-2792154 pw: Emerson; 5th-2792157 pw: Thoreau
Staple your paper in this order when you turn it in:
1. Typed essay
2. Rubric
3. Turnitin.com receipt
Here’s to a new page in the book that is your literary and life journey!
