A Tale of Two Cities

Chapter 1

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. In 1775 France and

England did not get along. Their major cities, Paris, France and London,

England, were worried about trouble. Mr. Lorry worked at a bank in

England. He met with a girl named Lucie Mannette to give her news about her father. After many years of being lost, Lucie’s father had been found.

He was in Paris.

France and England were fighting.

Chapter 2

Meanwhile in Paris, the rich citizens were not helping the poor people. Little children did not have food. It was an unhappy setting. Many people were very angry. It was dangerous because Lucie and Mr. Lorry were traveling to the city.

The poor were hungry and angry.

many years since they had seen one another, and they both looked different.

They were very happy to see each other and moved into a new home in

Paris.

Chapter 3

Lucie and Mr. Lorry arrived in Paris and met her father. It had been

Lucie and her dad lived in their new home for five years. It was now

1780. England and France were still not getting along. Lucie and Dr.

Mannette went to the trial of their friend Charles Darnay. Someone said that he had done something he had not done. Sydney Carton was the lawyer protecting their friend. It was very strange because Sydney and Charles looked alike. Everyone was very happy when the verdict of the trial was,

“Not guilty!”

Chapter 5

Charles and Lucie fell in love. Sydney also loved Lucie, but she only thought of him as a friend. Sydney became their very good friend. Soon,

Lucie and Charles got married. They had a little girl named Little Lucie.

Everyone was very happy.

Lucie and Charles were in love.

Chapter 6

Things did not stay happy for long. The rich and the poor of Paris began to fight with each other. Lucie and Charles wanted to take their family back to England. Charles was in danger because people were saying he had done something wrong again. He had to go back to trial.

The rich and poor fought. Charles went to trial.

Chapter 7

Charles went to trial again. He had not done anything wrong. He did not get a fair trial. He was going to jail and to be killed. Lucie and her family were very worried and scared. Their good friend Sydney Carton had a plan to help.

Charles did not get a fair trial. He was in trouble. Sydney was going to help.

Chapter 8

Sydney Carton knew that he looked a lot like Charles. He snuck into the jail and switched places. Charles and Lucie got away with their family to England. Sydney saved all of their lives. As he waited in the jail he thought of his friends and how happy they would be when they got away.

He thought, “It is a far, far better thing I do, than I have ever done.”

Sydney switched places with Charles.

Lucie and Charles got away with their family.
