What does Old Major discuss in his speech to the animals? 3. Review the words to the song Beasts of England at the end of Chapter #1. What does the song give the animals during such a difficult time? 4. Throughout Chapter #1, we notice that there is already a hierarchy (categorizing a group according to ability or intelligence) being established within the animal community. What do you notice about the ability level and intelligence of various animal groups? Make two to three predictions can we make about the animals and their roles in the community as the story progresses. Chapter #2 Questions Animal Farm 1. Why do the animals destroy the chains, bits, and halters after the revolt? Why do the animals feel such equipment is no longer needed on the farm? 2. Explain what the animals discover when they tour the farmhouse? Why are they surprised? 3. What will the seven commandments give the animals on the farm since they are now in charge? 4. Squealer is a very important character in this story. How can you describe him in this chapter? Make at least one inference about this character. 5. Propaganda is taking a partial truth and twisting it into a lie to serve the needs of the individual spreading the propaganda. As you read Chapter #2, speculate what stories might be propaganda and explain it. Animal Farm Chapter #3 1. How would you describe Napoleon? 2. How would you describe Snowball? 3. Why are they always disagreeing? 4. Boxer’s motto is “I will work harder” and never questions what the pigs are doing. While he should be praised for a good work ethic, he also makes a mistake by thinking this way. Explain his mistake. 5. At the end of the chapter, the pigs decide to take all the milk and apples and keep it for themselves. Using propaganda, Squealer convinces the other animals that they should accept this. What is this foreshadowing? Why is this dangerous? Animal Farm Chapter #4 1. How does Mr. Jones retaliate? 2. Frederick and Pilkington are neighboring farmers that represent countries in Europe criticizing Russia (Animal Farm). What is the propaganda that Frederick and Pilkington are discussing in this chapter? 3. Why is Boxer so upset after Mr. Jones’ revolt? What does his response say about the type of individual he is? 4. What are the animals really fighting for in Chapter #4? Is it just to protect each other? Animal Farm Chapter #5 1. What is Mollie guilty of in this chapter? How would you describe her? 2. Why did Napoleon urinate all over the plans? 3. Napoleon and Snowball are disagreeing on a variety of issues. What underlying issue is taking place between Napoleon and Snowball? 4. We learn a great deal about Napoleon in this chapter including his leadership style. Animal Farm – Chapter #6 Activity Managing employees is a difficult task. You have to organize work hours, try to keep your employees working, and ensure the company is maintaining a profit. The people in the community surrounding Animal Farm were meant to symbolize these countries. Many of the citizens of Russia were forced by Stalin’s regime to give false confessions and were then executed. This was done to prevent future rebellions. Questions: (Answers should be three sentences minimum). 1. What do the pigs say about Snowball and Mr. Jones in Chapter #7? What do they hope to gain by saying this? 2. In Chapter 7 the song “Beasts of England” was abolished by the pigs. What is the after affect in the minds of the animals? 3. Several animals on the farm are forced to give false confessions about disobeying the laws on the farm. Why did this happen? Animal Farm – Chapter #8 1. One of the themes to Animal Farm is Ignorance contributes to a society’s oppression (a group of individuals held back in a society or exploited). Explain in an eight sentence body paragraph how this is happening in the story using examples from the book. 2. After World War I, Stalin played political games with capitalist allies and Nazi Germany not wanting to align Russia with a certain country for fear of another war. Stalin used propaganda to delay his alliance decision. This political tap dance is shown in Chapter #8 when Napoleon deals with farmers Pilkington or Frederick. Give examples of how Napoleon (Stalin) used confusing or contradicting statements as a form of propaganda in chapter #8.
