suggestions/questions for improvement.
 Is the topic sentence of paragraph #1 accurate & clear? (poem title,
author, general/big idea)
 Does each paragraph begin with a claim that clearly & accurately
states the suggested/deeper meaning of the quatrain?
o Note: claim in last paragraph should be about overall
meaning of the poem.
 Does each paragraph include at least one quoted line from the
quatrain that helps prove the claim?
o Note: paragraph #4 should include BOTH lines from couplet
quoted together.
 Does each quote have a proper lead-in? (Watch out for runons/fragments!)
 Are the lines of poetry quoted accurately & correctly?
 Does each paragraph include the “reasoning” of the evidence?
 Does the reasoning in each paragraph include BOTH…

a) an analysis of what the words and/or literary
techniques in the quote suggest and
o b) an explanation of how the quote(s) supports the claim?
 Is the writer using present tense? (Use t-s to mark where tense
needs to be changed to present.)
o Note: It’s okay to write, “The standards of beauty in the
Elizabethan era were…”
