Suffrage- the right to vote
Equator-a line of latitude that divides the earth into northern and southern hemispheres
Prime Meridian- a line of longitude that divides the earth into eastern and western
hemispheres
Slavery-a cruel system in which one person owns and controls another person
Segregation-a system of keeping people of different races separate
Latitude-lines that cross the globe from east to west
Longitude-lines that cross the globe from north to south

Facts to know:
Frederick Douglass was born a slave. Douglass was a conductor on the Underground
Railroad. He was mainly known for fighting for the civil rights of African Americans. After
he wrote his autobiography he had to move to Great Britain because he was in danger of
being caught by slave catchers. He encouraged Abraham Lincoln to make the Emancipation
Proclamation to end slavery.
Susan B. Anthony was mainly known for working for women to have the right to vote in the
United States. She was a good organizer and speaker. She was arrested for voting for
President. She was friends with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and wrote a series of books about
women’s suffrage in America.
Mary McLeod Bethune was the first member of her family not born a slave. She went to
college at Moody Bible Institute to be a missionary, however when she graduated she
became a teacher. She started a school for African American girls in Daytona Beach, FL.
She was hired by Franklin Roosevelt to work for the NYA to help African Americans get
jobs.

Why did Susan B. Anthony believe that it was important that everyone have the right to
vote?
*Susan B. Anthony believed that everyone should be treated equal. She was
raised to believe that she could be just as successful as a man. She knew that women
could offer society a lot and giving them the right to vote would give them many
opportunities. Women were citizens of the US and should be given the right to vote
for leaders and laws.
Name two things that Mary McLeod Bethune did that helped African Americans get an
education and good jobs.
*She taught African American Children.
*Mary McLeod Bethune helped African Americans by opening a school so that blacks
could get an education.
*She worked for the NYA. National Youth Administration, to help African Americans
get training to do jobs.
*She advised President Roosevelt on ways the government could help improve the
education and training of African Americans so they could get good jobs.
