How does Romeo develop as a character during the play?
Intro:
Romeo’s character starts off as an immature, impulsive, archetypal teenager who
believes that he is in love. Further on in the play the writer establishes Romeo
through language and literary devices. This essay will examine how his character
develops throughout the play from immaturity to maturity by the use of language.
Para 1
In the beginning of the play Romeo is immature and is not aware of the family feud
between the Capulets and the Montagues.
“Here’s much to do with hate but more to do with love”.
This quote shows that there is only love in Romeo’s head and that he is completely
disconnected from the world and can only think about Rosaline
Para 2
Romeo starts to fall in love with Juliet and forgets all about Rosaline. This quote
shows his fickle personality because in the Capulet ball when he saw Juliet, his mind
completely changed
“Did my heart love till now?”
In this phrase Romeo is questioning himself and is having second thoughts about
Rosaline. This quote has a very strong effect towards the reader as it changes the
personality of Romeo very dramatically
Para 3
Further on in the play Romeo shows a sense of maturity as he tries to make peace
with Tybalt, who hates the Montagues
“And so, good Capulet which name I tender.”
This quote represents Romeo’s more mature personality, now Romeo is entirely
aware of the family feud between the Montague and the Capulet. Now that Romeo is
married to Juliet he is aware that Tybalt is part of his family and believes that
marrying Juliet will end the war between the two families
Conclusion:
In conclusion, this essay has examined how the writer established Romeo and how
his character developed throughout the play by the use of language and literary
devices.
