Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to isolate (hide) themselves or information about
themselves. The boundaries and content of what is considered private differ among cultures
and individuals, but share basic common themes. Privacy is sometimes related to the wish to
remain unnoticed or unknown in public. The degree to which private information is revealed
(made known to the public), therefore, depends on how the public will receive this information,
which differs between places and over time. Privacy is broader than security.
As technology has advanced, the way in which privacy is protected and violated has changed
with it. In the case of some technologies, such as the printing press or the Internet, the increased
ability to share information can lead to new ways in which privacy can be lost.

Many people enjoy learning about the rich and famous. They spend millions of dollars yearly
on newspapers and magazines that tell about the private lives of rich and famous people.
However, the people who enjoy reading about the private lives of others do not always like it
when people watch them!
In the past, important people, politicians, and other people in the public eye were the only ones
who worried about the right to a private life. Now, however, even ordinary people are
complaining about losing their privacy. They say that they have the right to be left alone and
that now, because of technology, it is getting too easy to violate (not to respect) this right.
Today, new technology makes it possible to investigate the most private parts of people’s lives.
For example, some employers watch everything their employees do. They listen to personal
phone calls, and they check how long their workers are at their computers. Some employers
even check their employees’ e-mails.
Many employees know that their companies watch them at work, but they do not realize that
they might be watched anywhere. Investigators can put secret microphones in houses or cars
when no one is looking and then listen from far away. They can use very small radios to follow
drivers in their cars.
Computers now have records on military service, health, school grades, and work performance.
People are beginning to ask why these organizations need all this information. They are also
concerned because investigators can get this information without telling them. It is not
surprising, then, that more and more people are complaining that they do not have a private life.

Some photographers, known as paparazzi follow the moves of important people to hunt
(search) for information. Of course, such practices are rejected (not accepted) by most singers
and movie stars, who consider this behavior an interference in their private life.
