Parallels between Antigone and Inherit the Wind
You are to write a comparison or a comparison/contrast essay that demonstrates your understanding of Antigone and
Inherit the Wind. What similarities/parallels can you find between the themes, events, and/or characters of Antigone and
those of Inherit the Wind. Pick one theme, event, or character in Antigone that has a parallel in Inherit the Wind and
explain and analyze the similarities or similarities and differences. Remember, this is not a pure contrast essay; you must
find some parallels.
You must provide analysis for this paper. Simply talking about how Antigone is like Cates will result in a not very
insightful essay. Once you prove that similarities and differences exist, make sure you explain to the reader how such
similarities and differences shape the events, the message, the conflict, etc.
Make sure that you select a topic on which you feel you will have enough information and understanding to write a welldeveloped essay.
Because this is a comparison/contrast essay, you should make sure that
 the thesis statement makes it clear whether the essay is comparing or comparing and contrasting subjects
 the thesis statement clearly identifies what subject is being compared or compared and contrasted
Quote/documentation requirements
You should have at least two direct quotes to include in this essay. In addition to the quote requirements, you must
support all of your statements about the plays by citing the specific part of the drama on which you are relying. This
means that every time you are relying on the text to support your statements, you need to include an in-text
citation to the passage that you are basing your statement on.
