The youth in your schools and centers are cordially invited to participate in the PAL/NYPD "Police Commissioner for a Day"
essay contest. The contest is open to all New York City students in grades 9 through 12 only. Each participant may submit an
essay on the topic that has been selected by Police Commissioner William J. Bratton.
Please encourage your students to develop a response that raises an issue and fosters a genuinely thoughtful recommendation.
The essay should be as clear and specific as possible. The topic this year is:
As Police Commissioner for a Day, what program would you implement to reduce youth
on youth crime, on the streets and in schools?
Winning essays will be selected by a panel of judges comprised of outstanding leaders from education, business, and civic
fields. The student selected to be the "Police Commissioner for a Day," will spend an entire day at Police Headquarters with
Commissioner Bratton. The winner will accompany the Commissioner to his meetings, planning sessions, and will observe how
the real Police Commissioner makes decisions affect the entire city. The winning student will also receive a $250.00 prize and a
personalized plaque. In addition, the top winner's school will receive a plaque and a $250.00 donation. The "Police
Commissioner for a Day” is one of many awards that will be presented to the winning essay writers. Other awards include
Deputy Commissioner, Bureau Chief, Patrol Borough Commander, and Precinct Commander. These winners will have an
opportunity to spend a day with top police officials. The contest begins immediately. All entries must be completed and
submitted to Ms. Lentini by Friday, March 18, 2016. Application is attached.
Winner will be announced the week of April 18, 2015.
Take Care New York (TCNY/2020) Initiative
Community Resource Exchange (CRE) is working with DOHMH to facilitate 28 community consultations in neighborhoods across all
five boroughs to promote the Take Care New York (TCNY/2020) initiative. These events have been designed to promote awareness of
DOHMH’s health equity approach as well as learn from community members about local health priorities. CRE is very pleased to have a
role in ensuring neighborhood-specific participation in shaping NYC’s health agenda.
Join us on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. to help create a healthier city.
**FREE tote bags and water bottles are available to participants. Refreshments will be served.**
In New York City, health outcomes differ dramatically between communities — poor health outcomes cluster in places where
resources and opportunities are limited.
No one's health should be determined by his or her ZIP code, race, or income. This is unjust and avoidable.
