The contest is open to all New York City students in grades 9 through 12 only. Each participant may submit an essay on the topic that has been selected by Police Commissioner William J. Bratton. Please encourage your students to develop a response that raises an issue and fosters a genuinely thoughtful recommendation. The essay should be as clear and specific as possible. The topic this year is: As Police Commissioner for a Day, what program would you implement to reduce youth on youth crime, on the streets and in schools? Winning essays will be selected by a panel of judges comprised of outstanding leaders from education, business, and civic fields. The student selected to be the "Police Commissioner for a Day," will spend an entire day at Police Headquarters with Commissioner Bratton. The winner will accompany the Commissioner to his meetings, planning sessions, and will observe how the real Police Commissioner makes decisions affect the entire city. No one's health should be determined by his or her ZIP code, race, or income. This is unjust and avoidable.
