BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS

Copies of the text

You should have a photocopied blue booklet copy of the play, but this is slightly different to the version you will be given in the exam. Copies are available in school but they must be kept here ready for the exam. You can borrow one to use in the school library but unfortunately will not be allowed to take it home. I therefore strongly recommend you buy a copy of Blue Remembered Hills. It is by Dennis Potter and the ISBN is 0-753-

01699 (you can search by this number online or give it to bookshop staff to help find it)

Copies of the DVD

We are trying to get copies of the DVD for each pupil, but they are not yet available. You can buy them from http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-

You should make sure you understand the overall plot and the key characters well. Follow the revision materials in this pack to help you.

The exam question will ask you to explain how you will play a role in a certain scene of the play. There are sample questions and a model answer on the following pages.

You cannot take notes about Blue Remembered Hills into the exam. A blank copy of the book will be provided for you in the exam hall.

BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS - Revision exercises

Recap the plot and play

Read the play, watch the DVD, write your own overview – just make sure you remember the overall storyline!

Introduction

Practice writing an introduction for this question. Memorise it so that you have one less thing to worry about in the exam and feel confident you will get off to a good start.

Pictures

Look at the pictures in the revision zone, work out which part of the play you think they are from and note down how you would perform the character at that point.

Try to write your notes in full paragraphs:

What would you do?

When would you do it?

Why would you do it?

Characters

Use the tables on the ‘Notes about Characters’ pages to note down everything you know about the characters, key quotes, how they act, who they are friends with, etc.

Planning answers

Use the ‘plan for answering question from Section A’ to plan your answers.

Use the ‘Scene charts’ to prepare for questions about any scene.

Practice papers

Look at the sample extracts and practice papers.

Try:

- writing your answer then check the mark scheme

- practice writing a ‘perfect’ answer using the mark scheme

Remember, the question is always the same; just the scene and the characters change:

Discuss, in detail, how you would play either xxx or xxx in [the selected scene]. You will need to refer to voice, movement, gesture and facial expression, as well as how your chosen character responds on stage.

You could look at any extract of the play and practice answering that question.
