The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) Essays and Research Papers Competition “UKRAINE AND THE CRISIS - CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES” Application Deadline: November 1, 2009 at conference@kse.org.ua The Kyiv School of Economics invites all interested students from Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova to participate in the essays and research papers competition on the topic “Ukraine and the Crisis - Causes and Consequences” with a separate session “The economics of the presidential elections” The best essays and research papers will be presented at the KSE annual student conference to be held on December 5, 2009 in Kyiv. The winners in each category will be awarded with monetary prizes: $200 – first prize, $100 – second prize *** Till a year ago Ukraine has been among the most growing economies. Today we again find ourselves among European leaders, this time on the other side. In the first half of 2009 industrial output fell by ~30%, GDP declined by ~20%, and prices increased by ~18%. Within a year the Ukrainian currency devaluated by 83.5%1 – more than any other currency in the world during the same period. To make things worse, upcoming presidential elections add to uncertainty and distort economic incentives. We are looking for essays and research papers that use statistics or econometrics and rely on economic models, theory or economic reasoning to analyze causes and consequences of such a painful shock. Both essays and research papers should be based either upon original research done by a student or inspired by somebody else research with additional analysis conducted by the student. The essays and research papers should be focused and precise and written in English. The special requirements to research papers can be found at http://www.kse.org.ua/NEW/conf.htm By November 1, 2009 all interested applicants should submit their essays and papers with a completed application form at conference@kse.org.ua with indication which category (essay or research paper) an applicant applies to. By November 15, 2009 all applicants will be notified about the results of selection. The selection will be made by a committee consisting of the KSE faculty members. The successful applicants will be offered to present their essays and research papers at the KSE annual student conference held on December 5, 2009 and have an opportunity to compete for the monetary prizes. Travel, accommodation, and food expenses of the KSE annual student conference participants will be reimbursed by KSE.
