Bowling For Columbine

The assignment for Bowling for Columbine is on my syllabus - I have reprinted here for you:

Assignment #6: Film Argument Analysis - 50

In an argument essay of 35 pages, analyze and evaluate Michael Moore’s argument about the reasons for the high rate of violent crime in America.

Which elements of his argument did you find most or least persuasive? How did he use the visual and auditory elements of film to support his argument?

Bear in mind that this is a movie produced for a mass audience, so Moore must entertain while he develops his argument - how does he keep the audience's attention in exploring a very familiar issue that has been discussed many times before?

This is presented as a documentary, but as we are learning - everything is an argument.

You should approach this essay in the same way that you approached the analysis of a written argument that you are currently completing.

Use your pink Analysis sheet that we have been using to analyze all the arguments we have studied.

Take notes while you watch the movie so that you will be able to quote at least a couple of good lines of dialogue and cite specific evidence from interviews he conducts with different people.

If you have time, try to outline his key points he is making (this is not for credit - it will be enormous help to you in trying to organize his argument).

We will discuss the movie using the pink analysis sheet on Thursday.

Bring Your Analyses of the Written Argument to class on Thursday.
