1.
This question paper consists of THREE sections:
SECTION A: Essay
SECTION B: Longer transactional text
SECTION C: Shorter text:

Answer ONE question from EACH section.
3.
Write in the language in which you are being assessed.
4.
Start each section on a NEW page.
5.
You must plan (e.g. a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words, etc.), edit
and proofread your work. The plan must appear BEFORE the answer.
6.
All planning must be clearly indicated as such. It is advisable to draw a line
across all planning.
7.
You are strongly advised to spend approximately:
 80 minutes on SECTION A
 40 minutes on SECTION B
 30 minutes on SECTION C
8.
Number each response as the topics are numbered in the question paper.
9.
Give each response a suitable title/heading, as indicated by the question.
NOTE: The title/heading must NOT be considered when doing a word
count.

Write neatly and legibly.

SECTION A: CREATIVE WRITING
QUESTION 1

Write and essay of between 250 and 300 words on one of the following topics:

Write down the number and title of your essay correctly. Supply your own title if
one has not been given.

You are advised to spend approximately 80 minutes on this section.

You may, if you wish, use some of the ideas suggested on the topics or write a
response that is entirely your own. The suggested ideas only serve as
guidance towards what you could include in your essay.

Write an essay that begins with the above words.
Some ideas:



When and where the incident/event took place.
The circumstances leading up to the incident/event.
Details of the incident/event, for example a scene of a crime or a
meeting with a long lost friend.

Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing tasks.

The body of your response should be between 120 and 150 words
(approximately 12 to 15 lines).

Write down the number and the heading of the text you have chosen to write.

Pay particular attention to language, register and audience.

You are advised to spend approximately 40 minutes on this section.

You may, if you wish, use some of the ideas suggested on the topics or write a
response that is entirely your own. The suggested ideas only serve as
guidance towards what you could include in your response.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
As a reporter for your local newspaper you have been asked to
cover an incident of bullying at a High School in your area. Write the
newspaper report which will appear in the next issue.
Some ideas:




An eye-catching headline
An introductory paragraph outlining the 5 w’s (Who, what, where,
when, why)
A factual report on the incident of bullying
The reaction and/or response of the principal, parents, etc

LETTER TO THE PRESS
You are fed up with the increase in the number of scrap metal
dealers in your area. Write a letter to the editor of the Cape Argus,
P.O. Box 56, Cape Town, 8000, in which you address the problem.

Scrap metal dealers accepting stolen goods
Scrap metal dealers are an eye-sore in the area

You borrowed an expensive item from your brother/sister and you
lost it. You had to tell him/her about it.
Write out the dialogue that took place.
NOTE: You must use the dialogue format.

How you plan to replace the lost item.

A momentous occasion has occurred in your life. Write TWO
diary entries expressing how you feel about it.
NOTE: Each entry should start with a date.

Your friend has done very well in his/her matric examination. His/Her
parents have organised a party to celebrate this achievement. They
have asked you to give a speech.

You have recently moved into a new house. Your parents decide to
have a housewarming party.
